We use ordinary domestic kettle and toaster and have never had any probs.  Mind you, I wish someone would invent a toaster that toasted both sides at once - top, bottom and middle!

Sizing. Let's start by determining what it is that you want to operate. Here's a table listing some of the more common appliances and their wattage requirements.
 

We have a cheapy that does us - we have to disconnect the smoke alarm every time we use it though, or it goes off - even with the kitchen window open next to it.

I have a cordless cheapy kettle from Tesco and so far, touch wood, it hasn't blown the fuse, and the leccy on our site can be a bit temperamental.  I think as long as you're sensible and don't have everything going at the same time, you'll be okay.

We use the cheapy Asda one at £4.79 - does the job, just make sure you turn one electrical thing off before you use another :)
