We currently have breakdown insurance with direct line which covers our caravan as well. However our new caravan is over 7m and they will no longer cover us. (something to do with the caravan not fitting on the vehicle ramp)

Looking at Caravan club mayday cover which is a very reasonable £62.00 for the year but does not cover for european trips. We are going away to france for six nights and if I take out "red pennant" cover it will cost £109 (holiday costs £106) just for that duration. Annual european breakdown cover will cost £150 but does not cover uk. Confused? you bet I am. All I want is an annual breakdown cover for the uk with a cheap european option when i need it. Anyone help us on this one?

Have a look at Britannia Rescue, they take caravans up to 8 metres and they are very reasonable compared with the competition.

Well said Terry!!   I'll second that, Britannia Rescue are one of the better ones ,they've just come under the Liverpool Victoria umberella so are a big reliable company. And the European extension is very reasonably priced We enquired about the extension to go to Southern Ireland but were told that it is included in the UK cover. Well worth a look.

Hate to say this, but if your van is over 7m + drawbar, breakdown insurance is likely the least of your problems. Its almost a dead cert that your motor insurance is invalid as you are quite probably driving an illegal combination :(

Only problem is with Britannia where does it say in the Policy Document that if you break down they will also take your Caravan to your destination? it mentions the Car.  I have visions of the Caravan being left at the side of the road LOL

From what I read from the article in Custer's post I tend to agree with him on the 18 metre bit - otherwise there are an awful lot of  4x4 owners towing the likes of twin axle units who are breaking the law?

Had another scout around the net for more info - the shipping length of the caravan is the total extremities and includes the drawbar i.e. the A frame which your gas locker sits on so if you wanted to be really sure you would need to find the dimension of the "unit" only. I'm sure that caravan manufacturers are wise to this because of the legal implications for a lot of our towing vehicles that are under 3500 Gvw. So from what I can see, unless you drive a monster vehicle most of us are restricted to a unit of 7 metres EXCLUDING the drawbar.

From custers link

Towing vehicle under 3500kg GVW

Length (excluding the coupling and drawbar)

7.0 metres

Maximum width

2.3 metres

So Unless you have a Transit class vehicle or larger there is NO 18m limit (thats actually a 60ft 44 tonne combo) just the 7m+ drawbar for the trailer.

With modern sloping & curved fronts I sure wouldnt like to be a test case as what was drawbar and what was trailer. My race trailer is easy, a 6.5m loadbed and its obvious what is trailer and what is drawbar :)

So when checking with recovery organisations etc, confirm whether they are toalking shipping (on the road hitch-numberplate length) or "trailer length" as legally defined, be it loadbed, habital, enclosed or whatever excluding drawbar
