It was only my third outing with my caravan, and yet again I managed to cause damage. This time it was to the caravan electrics, unfortunately the cable dropped down as I was travelling along and is now worn through so the indicator and brake lights are not working.
My question is how easy is it to repair or does it need to be professionally done??
I don't think my husband will let me loose with it again!

Is the cable frayed near the plugs?--you may have enough spare cable to cut it off & rewire the plugs-if not you will need a new cable installed--not difficult if you can do wiring--a repairer should charge you less than 2 hrs labour to do the job

I have been quoted approx £60 + VAT from one place and the majority of that cost is labour. Unfortunately it has gone too far back to be able to cut off and rewire, so will require a new cable. I did go to my local caravan shop and buy some cable but it is not the same thickness as the existing cable so I am a bit worried about it not being up to the job.

Either use Scotch Blocks or a terminal block, both available from a harware shop, strip back the wires and rejoin colour to colour. If the wire is in a position where it might move, support the join with a water proof tape. It wont look pretty, but the problem will be solved. If you have a soldering iron, or know someone who has, then this would be better still.
Just purhase a length of the correct colured cable, either Black or Grey from the caravan dealers or auto electricians & replace the frayed length. I see someone has kindly posted the plug colour chart, I'll save that one for future fraying.
This happened to us one just after we had our first caravan & it was no problem to replace. I would suggest that you buy a longer piece than you think you want & then ut it with care, I made ours just a little bit too short by thinking I'd got it right & like everything else in life, once you cut it off it's off.
