As most sites we go to are no facilities (just a tap and a CDP), our grey waste usually goes under the hedge.  But we always check what the arrangement is when we use a site we don't know.  I would NEVER empty grey waste into the CDP without express instructions to do so.

We often leave the end cap on the wastemaster cracked so the water seeps out at a steady pace ensuring it goies down into the ground yet leaving any "bits" in the bottom of the wastemaster, which are then emptied into the drain at the end of our stay. On rallies if we've been close enough to the hedgeback we use "the long grey pipes" dianebb talks of. If we've been on a show where the site is a farmers field we dig a hole slightly under the van and drain directly into that, ensuring its filled in before we leave.

we regularly visit a small cl and the owner tells us to deposit grey water in hedges.i found this out after several years of visiting and each time i carried the wastemaster to the cdp which was not at ground level.nearly killed me each time but i thought i was doing right.didnt think about the septic tank issue so thanks for that-wont be doing that again.

we have never let it drain onto the pitch and if i were in a tent (which we have been many times) i wouldnt fancy sleeping near someones bacon fat, peas rice etc either so we will be taking a long grey waste pipe if we need to reach hedges where requested by site owners.

It would seem the majority of us apply common sense or at the very least check with the site owner which he/she would prefer. Its a pity the writer of the letter in Januarys CC magazine didnt bother to check by asking the "lazy" person he saw commit this heinous "disgusting" crime or check with the site owner.

If your going to empty your waste in the hedge why not just let it run onto the pitch?Do the drains at your house just empty onto your lawn? Why not chuck your litter in a ditch while your at it?

ITS WASTE! GET OFF MY LAND!

If I remember correctly, the point the writer was making was that there WAS a sign saying to empty the grey water at a dedicated disposal point, but many people were ignoring it.

MYpoint was, if a site owner requests that grey water is drained into hedge bottoms, does that still make it a dirty, filthy habit. I personally have stayed on sites(mostly CL types) where despite there being signs pointing to a specific point, have still been asked by the owner to just "pop it into a hedge bottom". I am of course referring to mainly farm type fields and not someones nice lawned area. I would never empty my grey water directly on or near my pitch.

The original writer actually says he has stayed on 3 CLs where he has seen this done but if you read his letter carefully he only says he saw it done on one where there was clearly a sign to say otherwise. He was tarring all with the same brush, it was that which prompted my post.

If the site owner requests it then obviously it is fine.    Presumably on the unmentioned 2 sites there was a disposal point which the writer was using and they had not been requested to dump water other places, otherwise why would they complain?.

But we shall never know!    And anyway, life is too short to continue the discussion!

I should have mentioned that wed are on a seasonal pitch and shower water would have very little effect on a hardstanding as you would only be suing about 15 litres of water for a shower.  Anyway we dp check the are when we leave the site at the end of the year.

On CLs straight in the hedge.  On a CC in the waste water area, if ona commercial with no designated point, wherever is convenient for us without being a pain to others.

As I said before or on another thread/in a previous life I collect the shower water in a bucket and together with the water collected when it rains I use it to wash the car/van

Moisturising body wash/shower gel brings the car/van up a treat

At the site we go to in Brittany there is a grid under the tap where we always emptied waste water but a decree came out from new stewards that water was to be emptied in the toilet block at a high sink!!

It wasn't long before the hedges were employed

Not by me --- I trundle the aquaroll to one of those French hole in the ground loos as none of us Brits were using it anyway--and the loos were just for the rally

Some CL owners have septic tanks which they have to pay to have emptied. I have spoken to one who prefers the hedgerow around his field to filling his septic tank. That is his choice and personally I can't see anything wrong with it, but to call it a filthy habit is a bit OTT when the writer had probably  not checked the owners wishes.  I agree that emptying into a hedge where there is a clear sign is rude and in that instance just lazy. I think forum readers who have that particular magazine should read the letter and form their own opinions.

We have found that on the Continent there is a shortage of dedicated grey water emptying points, and often the CDP is the only place, and high up as John said.  I think a lot of sites could do with copying what the CC has on its sites.

OH (who is Norwegian) was quite disgusted at the lack of proper emptying points when we were in Norway and Sweden last summer.  They are well behind the CC in facilities.  We also found similar problems in Italy, Germany and Finland.
