We bought a second hand apache porch awning last year which is in good condition but smells! I think it must have been put away damp at some point previous to us buying it. I have tried airy it outside, washed the curtains and groundsheet but still smells. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the smell? Can you get awnings cleaned and if so is it expensive?

I bought a brand new Apache porch awning this year - and that smells!

The first time we put it up a couple of weeks back we both thought it smelled like B.O.  After agreeing that the source of the niff wasn't either of us (!) we determined that it was the awning.

It did get better after a day or two though!

What does yours smell of?  and is it the groundsheet, the awning or both?  If it's just a PVC groundsheet, then you could simply replace it with another cheap tarp.  They certainly do stink when they've been on grass for any length of time.

It is just the awning that smells I think. A sort of foisty/scruffy smell. It was in the boot of the car last weekend as we didn't put it up and the car stunk all week after it had been taken out! Seems a shame if I have to buy a different 1 as it is in good condition otherwise.

Next time you pack it away, roll in a couple of sheets that are used in a tumble dryer. like bounce or fabreeze.

Should be smelling nice and fresh next time you unpack it!

Hi Linda,

Some friends of ours had a similar problem, they took it into the backgarden laid it out and washed it with a mop in a solution of very diluted jeyes fluid and water then put it over the line to let it dry and they have,nt had a problem since.May be worth trying.

Good Luck

Regards Nickki

Thanks for all the advice. Would I need to reproof it if I've mopped it down?

Hi Linda,

I wouldent have thought so as effectively it,s like the awning being in a heavy rainfall.

I think I'd prefer the original smell to Jeyes fluid! Reminds me of public loos.

I would have thought a good airing and spray with Fabreze. I wouldn't use Jeyes, agree with the public loo comment.

Hi Linda,

I Think you should buy a new one and give the old one to any friends you know who have a caravan.  Problem solved.

if it is acrylic it should not need reproofing, canvas might if it is cleaned with soap etc. Caravan/camping shops sell stuff for cleaning and reproofing .
