I`ve noticed Bailey don`t supply a spare wheel as standard with their new caravans, so as I already have an unused spare with my Ace Diplomat that I would be part exchanging, I was wondering if it would fit the Bailey?

They are both 14" wheels on Al-ko chassis, but I wonder if the stud holes are in identical places? Does anyone have these details?

It seems daft buying another spare when the one I`ve got will do the job. I`m sure it won`t effect the p/x price too much as they will be able to sell the new purchaser of my old `van a new spare !!

Thanks, Rick

Sorry - I can't answer your question, but for info when I bought my Bailey, I ended up buying the wheel from the dealer and the tyre via a supplier.

Both our 2001 Elddis and 2006 Coachman came with a spare wheel as standard. I would have told the dealer that I spare wheel was to be included in the price of the van, or I would be going elsewhere.

The only way to be sure about the spare which you still have, is to find out the part number of the recommended spare for your new Bailey (it should be stamped into the metal), and check whether your spare has the same identification.  If there is any doubt, don't use it.

The PCD of the stud holes may "appear" the same, but the concave locations for the stud heads could be different.  These factors could cause all sorts of problems; from localised damage to the wheel assembly to loss of the wheel when travelling.

The wheel may be compatible, but please make absolutely sure.  Apart from the safety considerations for you, your family, and other third parties, if an accident did occur and the wheel was found to be unsuitable, your insurance would be invalidated with the risks of prosecution and enormous liabilities.

Bertie.

We bought our new Bailey Pageant last July, it came with a spare wheel & carrier as standard. However, obviousy you know whether or not they're throwing one in now. I'd hand the part ex over having kept the spare & say nothing about it existing. When you get the new Bailey home, try the spare, if it fits you're laughing, if it doesn't then you can either flog it or hang on to it.

I doubt if the dealer mentined the spare on your van when he valued it for part Ex & he won't even think about it when you change vans. If he does, tell him you've not got a spare.

I think you must be talking about a Ranger or Discovery because the Pageants and senators come with a spare as standard.

My Ranger came with a spare wheel but that may have been part of the package together with aquaroll, wastemaster and EHU.

With all the conflicting comments, can it be that the presence of a spare, or not, is down to individual dealers?

Bertie.

it is def only discovery and ranger that don't come with a spare as standard but you can try to negotiate one into the deal - stupidly i didn't

Pageants and Senators do include a spare and if memory serves me right it says so in the spec details from Bailey

I cant remember about this particular van, but do remember from many brochures that in general its only the top line/more expensive vans that have a spare and carrier as standard, quite a few its an option to have the spare wheel/tyre, let alone the carrier.
having said that Im sure that alot of dealers would throw in a spare and carrier as part of a deal clincher

Bought a new Ranger earlier this year and they do not come with a spare wheel, this is clearly stated both in the brochure and on the Bailey website. Before all the Bailey haters jump in, this is also the case for lower range caravans from several manufacturers.
Also consider budgeting for a spare wheel carrier as Bailey's standard location for the spare is in the front locker which will probably send the noseweight sky high - it certainly did in my case!!

The last time I traded a 'van in it went with the spare wheel - unused incidentally - and the dealer supplied the new 'van with a suitable spare.

I would give your dealer a tug on this issue. When I replaced the soppy spare on my car with a conventional spare it cost me over £100.00 so reckon it's going to cost at least this for a 'van spare.

Isn't it amazing that a manufacturer will even contemplate supplying a new 'van without a spare - incredible.

Cheers!

Vic

Thanks for your replies and thoughts everyone

I haven`t yet done the deal so I`ll try haggling for a spare but failing that my line of thinking is similar to Basilbrush`s and others. I shall certainly take Bertie`s advice to make absolutly sure its compatable.

Bailey are renowned for their lightweight and budget pricing but it seems they acheive this by not including as standard pricey, heavy essentials like spare wheels, etc.

Thanks again everyone

In the end I discovered the new caravan has 5 stud wheels where as the old one has only 4 !! But the salesman said they don`t expect any p/x `vans to come in with a spare and advised me that as they are identical sizes to just buy the new rim then transfer the tyre off the old rim and save £`s !!

Also, I discovered the underslung wheel carrier is very easy to remove & relocate on the new van.
