Hi

We're picking up our first caravan next week and don't want to look like a pair of numpties when we get there.  What do we need with us to be able to get it home?  Got towbar fitted so that's a start!  We're shopping for towing mirrors at weekend.  Number plates should be on the caravan. Have arranged insurance.  Anything else???  Help! 

You say...'Number plates should be on the caravan' .. but make sure the numbers are the same as on your car!!

Also might be advisable to inform your car insurers that you'll be towing.

We've got a stabiliser.  Made sure of that after reading things on here.  I'll let my husband know about the difference of towing the caravan empty or full.  He's a good driver but I know he's a bit nervous about towing.  That bit of info will no doubt make him feel better if he finds it hard to tow on the way back from the dealer.

 one thing that we had problems with on our 1st outing was leveling the van, so a few pieces of wood, of varying thickness is a good idea to put under the wheels

We've got a garage full of bits of wood.  I knew they'd come in useful for something!

Check your towball is the right one for the stabiliser

You do not actually say if it new or used, from a dealer or private purchase.

All has been covered really, if its from a dealer you should be OK but it may be worth checking tyres if private.

Just go thru' the van and do a last secure check on roof lights, windows, sliding doors, fridge door etc.

There's nothing worse than following a van that has a door swinging backwards & forwards. Its as frustrating for a driver behind not being able to tell them.

Don't forget to get your passenger to do a light check once connected.
