We have one of the normal Status 315 ariels on our caravan roof and we have decided it is pretty much useless. After one trip to lakes anyway.

My question is we are wanting to put the Status 530/5 in which is digital compatable. We have been told we can place it where our current ariel is. Is this correct? Is it simple or a job for professionals?

Also Are they any good?

Thanks
Gina

We have one - they are excellent - my dad retro fitted one on his van, but I would say a professional would be better!

Your current aerial would ideally be located over a locker inside your caravan to fit new directional aerial, it comes with a folding winder handle so would be best to be in locker, to be discreetly hidden or you might bump your head if it was put anywhere inside the caravan.

For optimum freeview best results are to get yourself a house aerial on a mast to get have a chance to receiving most if not all freeview channels in most areas. ,I have been previously researching it myself for quite awhile with trying different aerials and asking other caravan users on caravan sites about the new directional roof mounted tv aerials, took this pic on site of caravanner using an house aerial as opposed to new directional roof mounted one but using bracket to attach house aerial onHouse aerial on directional status The picture speaks volumes.

Practical Caravan have confirmed in this months mag (Aug 2007) that "An aerial must be pointed precisely towards a transmitter. Omni-directional units, however are designed to receive broadcasts from whatever direction they`re coming. They cannot be oriented. Directional roof-mounted tv aerials are better because you can point them to fine-tune reception, but results can still be varaible. They aren`t really large enough and cant get up high enough to make most of incoming signal. For optimum results, a free standing aerial is best; this gives you a lot more flexibility in terms of height and design of aerial you can go for. To give yourself the best chance of getting great reception you want an aerial that looks similar to what you`d find on the roof of the house." So in conclusion the status aerial you are thinking of having fitted is better than the omni directional aerial you already have but not as good as a house type aerial.

I have one on my new van and it works a lot better than my old omni type. It also has extending FM arials on each side of the arial and I am at 5ft 11ins and I could not reach them so how they work I dont know. Some signals are received horizontally and some vertically the arial is able to swivel to accomodate both types. As for fitting they would have to be mounted in a deep locker as when I have fully retracted mine you need about 2 feet space.

Well we have ordered it from a shop on ebay. They only wanted £114 for it and dealer wanted £156. Only problem is hubbie is now determined he is fitting it himself. (he's an electrician- not a caravan repair man!)

The old arial is situated above the Cupboard in the bathroom, so there should be any problem with the stem.

Thanks for advice, I have put the link below if anyone is after one.
