We are new to caravaning and have decided to travel down to Scarborough this summer, just looked up some routes and found that caravans are not allowed on some steep roads around the area.
Can anyone advise what the best route is from the A1(A19) coming from Scotland.
Caravans are banned on Sutton Bank which is just of the A19 at Thirsk. There is a marked caravan route around this.
Coming from the North you could leave the A19 just south of Middlesborough and take the road to Redcar then A171 to Scarborough but agin you have a climb on a steep hill out of Guisborough. However you can legally use this. There was a discussion on here some time bank about this issue so you could do a search. I think the favoured answer to that discussion was a route from Stokesly on a B road. No doubt someone more local to that area will advise.

we go balloch every september from scarborough using that route and never have any problems
When did Balloch move to North Yorkshire??
My brother Jim moved a (very) large gas bottle whilst on holiday in Scotland and later that evening his testicle started to swell. On phoning what amounted to NHS direct they advised him to attend at the local A&E as a matter of urgency. The nearest one was at Balloch. My OH drove him there, dropped him off at the door and went to park the car. On going into the hospital, there was no sign of Jim, so OH went to reception...asking for my bro.....name of Bullock.... I'll leave you all to work out the ensuing jokes about that one...
I go from Hamilton to Scarborough regularly via M74, A66, A1, then into Thirsk, then via (signposted) caravan route to Helmsley and then A 170 into Scarborough.
