Wow Thanks so much everyone i feel sooo much better now! i have booked a site in the new forest and whilst the down side is there is no EHU there are also no set pitches just a 20' rule so i'm thinking i can just abandon the van wherever i manage to manouver it to and pretend thats where i wanted to be!

Also i remember my driving instructor years ago once telling me to regard all other road users as idiots and you wont go far wrong! I'm guessing that rule is extra applicable whilst towing!!

Am now looking forward to it much more! Any advise on towing mirrors though? someone told me i dont need them but i'm thinking i do??

Ems xx

Hi, you do need them I think it is the law and I find that you would need them anyway as your normal car mirrors are not much good.

I find them very distracting when I am towing as I keep looking in the wrong mirror!

I bought the Milenco ones, we got them second hand off ebay, they seem like a decent mirror and they don't vibrate as much as some I believe. Although apparantly they don't fit vauxhall vectras.

Good luck and enjoy

Hi Ems,

I've only been towing a couple of years and towing doesn't bother me at all now. Off to Scotland from West midlands in a few days (can't wait). Us girlies are a growing bread when it comes to towing and the look on the mens faces when we manage to reverse into our pitch in one or two goes, i love it.

Just take your time, stop off along the way, and try and look at it as part of your holiday. You will be fine.

Best of luck Lisa

By Law you need at least 1 towing mirror. The drivers side must have an extension fitted. You'll need it to. Good luck with the reversing.

Another one here watching this thread. Girlfriend and i bought our first Van about a month ago now, and have been sorting it out since. We're a young couple (I'm 24) and we're so excited, and at the same time i'm SO nervous, as i've never towed anything in my life, and even worse about getting it onto the pitch - lol.

Have slight concerns as my Car is only a 1.6, so thinking it will struggle a bit, but can't afford a new one just yet :( However, that won't stop us, as we're booked in at Skegness in a few weeks time...

Sometimes can't sleep due to worrying about this reversing and none-powerful car!

Anyway, i wish you all the best of luck on your first outing!

Deano

(aparently its cool to tent but not to caravan! )Anyway I shall continue to be very excited about my new whistling kettle and gas lantern!!!!

I just can't wait to collect our new van!  I am having great fun buying bits and pieces for it, and my dining room is bursting at the seams with melamine plates, cutlery sets, whistling kettle, storage jars (lightweight!) and now the gazebo has arrived that we are planning to put up beside the van it is even more crowded in here!  I need the van so I can put the bits and bobs in it and free up my dining room again.  My lovely husband has told his mum we will take it to show her when we collect it, so it needs to look pristine to meet with her approval!
Off to decide whether to buy nets or just use the  blinds, curtains and insect screens.......

Just take your time is the only advice, i'm still a newbie 3rd outing coming up this weekend. I go at a steady pace, pull over when possible to let traffic past if i'm starting to get a tale back behind me. As for the reversing, i dreaded this bit but gotta say i have taken to it like a duck to a water. last outing i was reversing on to my pitch and being watched by two fellow caravaners, once on pitch this guy shouts across, i see you have done that a few times before!! my smug reply! no actually its only our second trip out with a van.  " most of all have a great time"

My husband says when reversing onto the pitch do it using your wing mirrors not by looking over your shoulder you should then be able to understand the caravans movement !

Hope this helps
