I am about to put up my new awning up for the first time and I have been told to use a silicon base so the awning slips through the caravan slots with ease. But i have forgotten which silicon base is he best. Is it fairy lquid, WD40 etc? I was told one of them damages the skin of the caravan.
WD40 is not a silicon lube! don't use it. If you cannot get down to Halfrauds and buy a spray tin then Pledge furniture polish (read the label to see if it still contains Silicon) will do at a pinch

Hi Josel just pop down to your local caravan shop who should sell small bottles of awning rail cleaner and a small rail brush to do the job with only a few pounds for both, and what a difference it makes fitting your awning well worth the money
dont use washing up liquid either, if you get it on the awning it will remove the waterproofing, and will be very difficult, if not nigh on impossible to re-proof the affected area.
We got ours from a dealer. It is a silicone spray and says so on the can but haven't got it to hand at the mo. It has helped me to put the awning up as I am doing it by myself. Everything is clean and new, but the spray did make life that bit easier.

That's the stuff, but be careful with it, if you get any drips from it on your windows wipe it off immediately. I didn't see them so left them on for a week and when I finally wiped them off the window had deep cracks in. Fortunately the CC insurance agreed with me that it was accidental damage and replaced the window for me.
------------- I've taken a vow of poverty, to annoy me send money
Go to a motor factor and ask for some silicone spray. It will be a quarter of the price of a similar can with some pretty artwork on from Halfords or a caravan showroom. It's all the same stuff. You can use it on the awning rail and zips to stop them sticking, also use it on the seals of the cassette toilet, clean the dash of your car, even clean your shoes with it.(Keep it of the soles though, it's very slippery)
