hopefully someone can help. whenever i am towing and have to accelarate hard to go up hills etc there is a smell that comes from the car that smells like a burning match. anyone have any ideas
Sounds like the clutch slipping to me also as this is quite a distinctive smell. It might be worthwhile having it checked out. Also does it only occur when towing?
i dont think i have smelled it without towing. i thought if the clutch was slipping it feels as though you are accelarating with the clutch in. i have never heard the engine revving if you know what i mean. i'm probably wrong though
the smell is the clutch burning on spin and under normal conditions may last for years,,things change when you put a ton of caravan on the back making it work a lot harder.advise you get it checked before going out again because it could let you down at any time, and on the way to holidays is not good.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
You would not always notice it. A mechanic would probably pick up on it before you would. A trade secret for checking your clutch is to pull the handbrake up hard, engage 3rd gear and slowly release the clutch at about 3000 rpm. The engine should stall. If not then your clutch needs replacing.
