I store my van inside the base that I work at (great security, but difficult for some insurance companies to understand).  It is one of the perks of the job, but we get charged at the moment.

I was wondering if anyone else out there is being charged for their storage on MoD land, because I have some information that makes charging against the rules.

Depends on what you term MOD land.

We have a friend who stores his 'van on the RAF base where he works - I don't know if he gets charged for the storage, but I do know that the insurance companies won't acknowledge that it's secure storage!!!

I'm not surprised that its not classed as "secure". Near where we are, at an RAF base, the chains on the crash gate were cut, and a number of caravans stolen.

Our "secure" storage is protected with CCTV, electric fencing, card only entry, 24 hour surveillance etc. What's more, we get 20% discount on our insurance.

I know of a few who store there vans on fire stations, but as possibly with the MOD and certainly the Fire Service a few complaints have gone in asking why vans can be stored on site, and as a tax payer why they cannot store thier van too.. as after all they pay for the site and workers wages from taxes.

Before I get hit by a barrage of bullets or fire ( exscuse the pun ) it is a fact that complaints have been placed against the fire stations, not my view., just 18 years in the job,

 Perhaps a fair point, i dont know, happy to pay the fees of a secure compound. 

I think that if you are in the lucky position to be able to store your caravan on any works property then you should be more than happy to pay a small fee for this privelige, of vourse even better if it goes to charity.

As far as MOD ground goes I recently saw an article on the telly whereby a young chap (non army) was staying with his Army friends and after a few drinks he stole a tank and ran over a car with it while his mate filmed it on his phone, perhaps that is one reason why the insurance company's do not consider it a secure caravan park.

Hi, I don't want it to sound like I expect something for nothing (although that's always nice). The reason behind my post is that there are rules governing this and the base where I work and store my van seem to be blatantly ignoring them.

I do expect to pay if there is a cost, but they have increased the charge to over £200 and there is no cost as this is outside storage (there is space for nearly 100 vans so figure out how much the welfare fund is raking in! - they are not short of cash either, their bank balance has the same numer of digits as a phone number.)

Fortunately I am not in the army so there are no tanks anywhere near the van storage, it is also well away from any accomodation so no problems there.

i left the army last year after 18 yrs service, most camps i served in had a seperate area for caravans, boats, trailers ect, the easiest option for your insurance worries would be to contact abacus (aldershot area) and see about getting your van covered along with your kit insurance.
