suppose tou could take the 171 to whitby then the road into pickering but think that road takes you up slieghts bank

its that long since i was down that way can't remeber how steep it is

many years ago used to go to pickering quite a lot with a six wheeler with 15 ton on the back used to go via stockesly and helmsey. lot of twisty road and very hilly though

did the same trip and got lost too. next time I went further down and through york (ring road) then up past eden camp  I think it was just as quick and certainly easier.  see the scarborough thread they have directions for the over hill bit. scarborough is a nice day outing if staying the week.

I have thought about taking the caravan to Flamingoland. Would anyone recommend it? I've got two daughters aged 9 and 15. Ive also just got a boxer pup I would probably take as Im a bit worried about putting him into a kennel and undoing the housetraining so soon!!  As we live in Scotland it is a bit of a journey but we would make the effort if we were making it our main holiday.

Wizzo 1968

Been down to that area many times from here in Northumberland. Not sure where you actually are in Co. Durham but if you get yourself across to the A19, travel to Middlesborough and take the A174, then onto the A172 to Stokesley. From Stokesley take the B1257 right down to Helmsley. Then follow the A170 to Pickering, then right onto the A169. This takes you right to Flamingoland. Don't worry about the fact that the road from Stokesley to Helmsley is a B road. It's as good as a lot of A roads that I've travelled and certainly ok for caravans. If you need a "comfort" break on the way there's a nice car park with toilets at Chop Gate on the B1257. Hope this helps.

I would heartily recommend it. Bear in mind it can be loud and camp site is not 100% I would rate it 80% but the total package ie free entry to park and location near eden camp and york make it a great holiday for us. Well worth the trip down.

Thanks Huntsman. Are the toilet facilities & showers clean enough? Thats all that really concerns me in a campsite. The rest I can put up with. I do fancy it though. I'm sure the kids would love it.

you need to come down the A19 and folow the signs for stokesley, then the helmesley road, follow that through to pickering and then turn right at the roundabout towards malton. yes there is one long hill and it can get a bit narrow at times but this is the best road to take, we have even done this route 2 new years ago when we had that bad snow. it was fun, but not impossible!!! it can get busy at helmesley tho in the summer months. great chip shop tho
