Hi everyone

This is the MLPTM for our caravan.  We tow with a 2 ltr Mondeo 130 bhp TDCi but want to change to a four wheeled drive. What sort of 4WD Car would be able to get to pull this weight.  We currently tow at 89% if fully loaded.

I would think just about any sensible 4X4 we see on our roads would pull it. My L200 has a towing capacity of 2,700 kgs. A Nissan Terrano would sort you out & is a good vehicle. Land Rover Discovery could more than hamdle your caravan & be a good vehicle to go with it.

Going by your Gallery Frank, I would say you are a bit biased on the Land Rover front

An X Trail would do the job at both towing and for a family car.

not sure which one are you looking at you need to know the kerb weight of it

if you are looking at Freelanders do plenty of research their are some bad ones out there

As a previous poster said...what's wrong with your Mondeo? What is it's kerbweight?

We have just returned from Devon towing a van weighing 1500kg (actual weight-all up)

My Mondeo estate 130ps (Kerbweight 1560) was loaded up with luggage awing roof box etc.

Stability of the rig was excellent, the car held 55 mph going up Telegraph Hill and I felt that there were no issues with braking or acceleration efficiencies.

Now, I will be the first to accept that this set up is right up to the limit of guidance given, I have been a regular (if not cautious) tower for three years now and will be happy to journey with the same set up again.

You need to evaluate what you would gain by moving to a heavier vehicle. If it is so you can tow "without knowing you have a van behind" well I very much accept that the Mondeo should go.

As to other issues, there are so many variables that, again, in my opinion, the 4x4 option is not necessarily the obvious choice.

I would think carefully about going down the 4x4 rd I have a 3.1td bighorn and tows great but the fuel bills break my heart. I have a compass omega 1450kg and I'm looking for a good diesel tow car. But if your not doing alot of miles when not towing ( unlike me ) the 4x4 does tow very well and feels very safe.. I did tow with my skoda octavia before with our old van but the omega was a little too much for it!!

I don't doubt they are excellent tow vehicles, but on my test drive I was nearly overcome by the smell of new plastic and the "wallowing" effect on corners.

It was as if there was a giant tank of water in the back. Mrs U-M was quite literally nearly sick!

If I had a burger van to tow for a living the Kia would be my first choice as well.
