We are newbies and just wondered if it is ok to use normal toilet paper in our Thetford caravan swivel toilet thingy or do we need to buy Thetford toilet paper? Can the toilet be used fully as you would at home or is it no.1's only. 

The people we just bought the caravan from were a bit posh and I was embarrassed to ask about the toilet do's and don'ts.

Would appreciate your help.

You can use ordinary toilet paper - it just doesn't break up quite so much as the Thetford stuff.  Don't buy really 'posh' toilet paper - we find the recycled sort seems to be best - although best of all is the cheap stuff they sell in French supermarkets (or the LIDL cheapo stuff).

You can do whatever you want in it!!  The blue or green stuff you put in the bottom breaks down whatever goes in, and deodorises as well.  We tend to empty ours way before the indicator shows it's full, though - and make sure you empty it before towing!  Empty the toilet rinse fluid in the bowl into the cassette before taking the cassette out to empty.  Rinse the cassette after emptying, and refill with diluted blue or green stuff.

Don't clean the toilet bowl with bleach or anything like that, and never mix anything with the toilet chemicals as you can get all sorts of reactions.  You can buy a special toilet cleaner from Thetford, and I've seen other things recommended on here (maybe search under Cassette Toilet - and see what threads come up).

I must admit...I use Fenwicks top and tail for my porta potty. I keep a small measuring jug in the loo for this purpose. I like the smell.

...does this qualify me for a free sample Mr. Fenwick...and a free blue micro cloth rough on one side and white and fluffy on the other?

I'm glad you asked that question because I'm trying to persuade my OH to get a used caravan and it was one of the many questions that I'll be asking all you friendly folks. So thats one of my questions answered already. Thanks Micky and Lisa.

Oh, don't start me off on "breaking-down"!  I spent the weekend in mine with my 2 kids and my friend and her 3 kids, all 8 and under.  All they seemed to do was use the toilet (number 1s and 2s).  It got emptied every night (not because we wanted to, it needed it!)

Before coming home Monday, it was my turn to do the duty with the cassette and I was there for bloomin ages rinsing, because no matter how much I shook it, there were still 2 lumps rolling around inside.  It was not nice. 

I use normal paper (it would cost me a fortune to use the posh stuff) and Top and Tail.
