It does only keep it cold if its been pre chilled before going away.  Does fridge have a light.  Ours has 2 switches a red for 12v and green for mains.

Just to chip in - ours doesn't work in transit.  The 12v light should come on when plugged through car and it doesn't.  It is plugged into the mains at home prior to going away and the 240 volt light works.  As far as we aware the wiring is OK - as it came from the manufacturer we suppose. It has been serviced by the retailer.  What should be turned on/off?  Are we doing something wrong?  Ours is a Dometic 7271 in a Swift Challenger caravan.

Food poisoning.

It can take many hours to get the fridge temp down once you arrive on site if the temperature is at its seasonal norm.

When i set off i simply turn the switch from mains to battery and my frozen remain frozen and the chilled food remain chilled.

The only "faffing" i have had was changing the plug and socket on the grey lead due to the earth pin melting.  Having wired in an extra earth the pins are as 'good as gold'.

Everyone should check first that they actually have an earth wired on pin 7 on the the centre pin on the 12S grey plug and also check at the end of every journey for possible heat damage on the pin if an additional earth has not been wired in.

There has been a few useful threads on this subject already.

Agree Steve even to having wired the extra pin!

It all depends on where you are towing to

Lat outing for us was 45min away to the Peak District

Continental holidays make using the fridge on tow a must especially if you go to the south of Spain which a lot of people do.

This is very common and is cured by wiring "the extra pin"

The article link above highlighted by John is an excellent article and i believe there must be a very large number of owners who have experienced the problem of the pin/housing melting.

I think that the wiring changes and the pin melting cannot be stressed enough.

As mentioned i have already had to replace the 12S plug and socket.

At the time of changing the plugs and doing the wiring mod the Caravan plug was less than 3 years old and the car socket was less than 1 year old.

I regret the change from the red and green switches for the 12V and 230V switching

You could leave the switches both "on" and when the car was hooked up you got 12V and when the mains was hooked up you got 230V

You only had to remember to switch them off when not wanted if the van was in storage or being towed without the need for cooling the fridge.

Now I have a rotary switch that changes the voltages or gas so it can be forgotten and need a stop to twist the knob

At least it is better than the fridges with no lights on at all

I fitted lights to my own fridge and a few friends' a couple of years ago

Hi Steve I think that long tows to Spain finished my 12S plug off before the mod was made.

The plug was well maintained and the slot in the centre pin opened out regularly/lubricated with Tri-flow

No problems in 5+ years since the pin mod

I wonder if the latest Dometic and Thetford models that operate on thermostat on 12V will put less load on the plug/socket and reduce burn out

13 pin plug sockets are mooted for next year on new vans so that could be the end to burn out
