Been to see a fabulous caravan today. 2001 Hobby, absolutely beautiful inside.

All protective coverings still on ect for £3500, what a bargain!!

I was ready to whip out my cheque book until a lady poked her head round the door and said...."wheres the toilet?"

I was so in love with it I never noticed it didnt have one.....or any running water for that matter. No sink either.

Now I understand why they are so spacious inside, how do people cope without a toilet of sink ect?

Not really a bargain without the main requirements, just floor space!

A lot of the big hobbys dont have toilets or showers as they are meant for site use where there are facilities provided What size was it? if it is one of the big ones make sure it's legal to tow.

Sounds like one of the ones that has to be towed by a 3.5 ton plus vehicle Troddy.  Google for them, I think the biggest that is legal here is a 540 for towing by a normal vehicle.  The other issues are insurance and site acceptance so be sure you can insure it and the sites you want to use will accept it.

Many continental caravanners use on-site facilities and don't see the point of spending a lot of money on features they can do with out.  There are probably lots of UK caravanners with British build vans who have never used their onboard shower.  In fact I recall a thread where people said just that.  I suspect most people use on-site facilities for washing up their dishes, clothes etc. so they don't really need a sink.  I've even come across members on this site who use their oven as a storage locker because they never use it.

On a slightly different note . . . . . I've known a caravanner who filled their aquaroll.  Three days later they poured all that water down the drain.  They had only needed water for a total of twelve cups of tea!  Why didn't they just fill the kettle when they need a brew?

I can't imagine caravanning without these simple essentials.

OH and I use all our on-board facilities including the shower. Don't like inheriting other peoples' muck etc in the showers, toilets etc.

Sorry but that's just the way we are.........

For us the point of having a van is to be able to rely on ourselves, but that's not the same for everyone obviously.

However, as I've been used to touring as a dad with young children (my current youngets is 4 and we just did a five week tour, 3 weeks just the two of s) try doing that without your on-board facilities!

The joy of camping is you literally meet all sorts, and it caters for all sorts!

There's nowt like using ones own facilities. We always use them. Hate going to the camp loos only to find someones hairs in the shower and the floor wet for example. And getting down to brass tacks - isn't it awful when you have to wait for a cubicle for a number 2 and go straight in after someone else and the seat is still warm?! What's more, we like to 'ablute' straight from bed without having to march accross the site carrying everything!

Yeh but it can be equally awful sitting down to a full English breakfast and a nice cup of tea with the lingering smell of those number 2s only inches away

Hi Craftlady, I know it sounds a bit basic and I could never manage without a cooker, I mean a holiday without the smell of bacon and eggs cooking in the morning would not be the same would it? But maybe someone would use such a caravan the way they would use a tent and would use camping cookers and portable toilets etc and the beauty of such a caravan would be that they would not have to erect it and take it down etc. I should imagine if they were to put up an awning this would be an ideal place to put and use their camping equipment and for a lot of families especially those on a tight budget this set up would seem wonderful.

Not everyone can afford or even wants the luxury vehicles that some of us are fortunate to own and although I enjoy all the luxury and comfort of our motorhome (in fact we take delivery of a beautiful new motorhome on Tuesday and I am sooooo excited) I can still see the attraction of other vehicles too and when my kids were little and holidays were a real luxury - they would have loved such a caravan.

I think as long as folk are happy and enjoying whatever they have that is the main thing and to me that is the beauty of camping, caravanning and motorhoming as you see so many different set ups and some of them are wonderfully bizarre and inventive.
