Hi all I was wondering if anyone could help out

I was thinking of getting a bigger car to tow my van when,  I had the idea for the 2/3 weeks a year I need a big car/ 4x4 was it possible to hire one!!!  Can  you hire say a discovery or similar with a towbar?

Has anyone else tried this?

I am sure this would be a great environmental  way of caravanning

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Thanks just had a look at their web site. They hire a landcruser which would fit the bill if it has a tow ball. will give them a ring

A quick Google brings back 39000 results for "4x4 hire in Surrey"! Should be something suitable in that lot!

hi, we tried to hire a van or 4x4 last year, but no one would entertain us, they say the insurance is to high for a hire vehicle with a tow bar.......

There is a company based in Paddock Wood, Kent that rent Discoveries as well as a few other vehicles that have towballs attached. Failing that, try SHB 4x4 hire. They have regional offices around the UK. We hired a 110 Defender from them last October to tow our caravan and the Southampton office came up trumps, even fitting the correct drop plate for us so that the hitch height was not too high.

We had to have a 4x4 hire car last year after some numpty drove into the the front of the Disco - RAC found it for us (we have full cover), and her insurance paid for it, but as we got copies of the paper-work, I know it cost £170 a DAY!!  Goodness only knows what the insurance would have been had it not been an 'insurance job' anyway.

Thanks Defender & Scampi. it seems there are a few places but the cost puts you off?

From memory.......... we hired the Defender from Friday afternoon until the following Monday week. Due to their weekend rate, it was costed over 10 days, and I think the bill was around £550 - £600 for the break? May have been a little less, honestly don't think that it was any more though.

Gosh, my memories bad! Just remembered that there is a company down near Hastings that hire Sedonas with towbars. Can't think of their name, but Sedona and Hire in a certain search engine should find it for you double quick. All they need is a little notice as they fit the tow bar specifically for your hire.

Rapid Car Hire in Kidderminster have put a tow-bar onto the Mondeo that I have on hire from them for no extra charge - covered by my own insurance however - not sure if this makes a difference.
