Hi Folks

Having just bought an insurance disposal van without any instruction manuals to speak of, this could be the first of many posts for help so please bear with me!

Just tried to unhitch the van from the car and really struggled - eventually i got the hitchlock to pull up to the second position and free from the towbar - is there a button or a knack that I am missing?

Thanks

Stu

While trying to unhitch you must ensure you are pulling on the handle, also find that the coupling will not separate if either fully compressed or extended.

Lift the handle to the first position, then pull in the direction the handle is pointing e.g. up and towards the caravan and once you feel it move pull up again and the handle should go up even further. Works for me...

We have also had a lot of problems getting used to this stabeliser. On one campsite we thought we were going to have to leave it on the car.

We have found out if the consentiner bit isn't fully extended it won't come off. So once we have reversed our van to where we want it we have to pull forward a touch just to release it.

Also sometimes it seems to stick to the tow ball so when we are trying to wind up jocky wheel is just lifting can up and not releasing, Hubbie was advised to get a bit rough with it (not sure if this is advised but it seems to work)

You must make sure that the hitch is not under any tension and it should release OK.

It does take a bit of grunt but provided you pay heed to this tension issue you should be OK.

Got the knack of taking it off now - its all in the way that I pull the lever back - I have another question now!

Should it be possible to operate the hitch without it being attached to a tow bar? The reason I ask is that I have bought a hitch lock from Towsure that looks as if it clamps around the nose when it is 'closed'. Only problem is that cannot get the lever to shut when it isn't attached to the car

It needs a dummy ball in the hitch to close it and takes a bit of wiggling (technical eh!). The rob stop I bought came with a hitch insert but I should think an alko one that Towsure sell would work.

Jon.

P.S. I never have to release tension before unhitching
