We stopped in the Calais area at the end of a French tour a couple of years back - the area seemed to be overrun with homeless immigrants looking for a way into Britain (and a way of nicking your camping equipment). I suggest taking a (min) 50 mile trip down the coast away from the hustle and bustle of the port town. (Le Touquet is nice / quaint about 45 miles south) We found driving over there a darn sight easier than driving over here.
(ps - we used the Caravan Club for the ferry - van went for free)
