Ok no laughing here but my hubby and I have to put our awing up by ourselves in a couple of weeks. My parents have been away with us before and my dad has been on hand to help but he's going fishing this time (I know where his priorities lie!). Anyway, the problem we'll have is that being a 5'1" shortie I'm not sure I'll be much use to the hubby when we have have to put up the awning. Even if I stand on the caravan step I still have trouble reaching the highest bits! I surely can't be the only one who has this problem. Any suggestions??
I'm not much taller than you - 5' 4" - but we manage if I use the caravan step. Ours is a two step effort, though, not just a single step so that does help a bit more.
I don't do a lot of the reaching up high, though - OH does that and I just pass him the right bits at the right time and hold poles in place when directed to do so. He does the feeding of the awning through the channel (using the step at times) and I feed it to him from the channel entrance. I guess it's all about finding the bits you can do and figuring a way round the bits you can't!
I daresay if you were really struggling, there'd be someone on site who could help.
Good luck and have a great time!

I'm 5foot 2 and tend to assist in a purely supervisory and "hold this" way - even on the step I am not much use so I can sympathise. We always manage quite well though
I,m 5 foot 1" and i thread the awning at the start ,the OH pulls it thru and then we start to argue .We always say we wont and laugh about it afterwards but we always argue. Our 32 year old daughter takes the grandkids off out of the way .She looks at us both and says i,ll see you in a bit.I wonder why.Ha Ha
Since everyone is saying how tall they are, I'm 5' 9" and I put the awning up on my own it's an easy job it doesn't take long and does not need two sets of hands. Besides which I wouldn't want to deprive her of her snooze after all that harrowing journey in the passengers seat.
------------- I've taken a vow of poverty, to annoy me send money
There are more divorces caused by putting the awning up but if you like to tell us where you will be we will bring our chairs to watch. Not that this is a lot of help to you.
Nedra is 4'10,I'm 6' You get it in the end we manage, I do the high bits, she does the pegging! Its really not to bad, just trial and error, just use it as an excuse to go away more to get the practice in!
------------- Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
With both of us being only 5ft 4in tall we take a small step ladder it was never a problem untill we got a tall van and a Dorema awning where the parts that need tightning are on the high side of the awning.
We have a tall van and a Dorema awning too! We're both a bit on the on short side so looks like we'll be buying a step ladder. Either that or we'll be lifting the kids onto our shoulders to reach the high bits!
The wife's only about 5'3'' (against my 5'7''). The ususal scenario is that I do all the work while she stares, watches, advises, has a fag, has a pot of tea, watches, passes comment, has another fag, grumbles and then gives more advise before I tell her where to go! The best way she can help me is by taking the kids into Scarborough for a couple of hours whilst I get on with the pitching of the unit ....(in Devon!)

Well we were going to attempt it sober but after reding some of these replies I'm now thinking I'll get the wine out before we start!
you 'MUST' crack a bottle prior to attempting the awning.
you WILL argue........so just laugh at each other and accept it.
you will more than likely have one if not all of the poles crash into the side of the van causing those tell tale battle scars......again, the plonk will ease the pain.
erection gets easier with practice but arguing and collapsing poles will always be there.
