Service cost £175 plus 2 x Hubnuts £5.50 

Service Managers explanation when I queried the item.

''When the Caravan wheels are removed and brake drums accessed to check for wear. A seal is broken. The 2 Hubnuts are replaced with new hubnuts which  leave an unbroken seal. Should you have an accident and the police investigate your van and find broken seals - you could be in trouble.''

This was our 3rd service - first 2 services were at supplying Abbey dealer [no hubnuts charged or mentioned] and this 3rd service with our local Lunar dealer. Our van is a 2004 Abbey GTS Vogue.

Anyone come across this before or is it a 'ripoff'

Yep same happened to me in August at my local Lunar Dealer, same explanation.

The hub nuts are slightly oval and when tightened to the correct torque they grip the tread etc

It is recommended that they are changed at the second service when the drums are inspected/cleaned out but I ask for it to be done at the first service as well

There is no visible seal that I have seen

One-Shot Nut
Note: The flanged hub-nut, located under the dust cap, used to keep the brake drum in situ, is a ONE-SHOT NUT (ie. must only be used once).

If removed it must be replaced with a NEW flanged nut - torqued to 290 ± 10 Nm (214 ± 7.5 lbs/ft).

yep, same on alot of cars too, once taken up to the correct torque they stay there, when they are removed they will never work the same.
some places list them asd a part, some its in the service as its a standard replacement

Thanks everyone who replied, I feel happy again.

It looks like the Lunar dealer is superior to the Abbey dealer [unless they just hid it in the sevice charge].

Perfectly correct to change them.Although the explanation is a strange one.These nuts must be changed on every service.

They are of an oval shape and act as a locknut.They are also tightened to a veru high torque to pre load the bearing.That is why thet also have a flange on them.

Pre 1992 we used to have taper bearings with a castellated nut and a split pin.Post 1992 have a sealed bearing with the one shot nuts.

The termonology One Shot Nut means exactly that.You can only use them once.

I well remember them castellated nut and lots of grease under the finger nails

Yer could strip your brakes down when yer felt lark it thannows

Its not the same nowadays

But you do get to buy and use a BIG torque wrench to do up them there one shotters

Luckily i have such a torque wrench, it 3 feet long!! not one of yer little uns!

not stripped me brakes on this van yet though, it will be done shortly though!

(PS does anyone know if a 1988 Musketeer has one shots??)

I'm afraid it is! Where I used to work we used torque wrenches that were 5-6 ft in length. Very heavy, but I was young then!
