Have just bought our first van. It isn't new but a great first van to see how we like it.

Just been away for our first weekend and when we put the bed away in the morning the bottom of the cushions and the wood on the seating was damp.

I am panicking that it is damp but my husband says it was condensation.

Help - is he right? It is now in storage until after Christmas and I am worried we will go back and it will be horribly smelly and damp.

Am I being paranoid as my husband suggests?!?!

we didnt get this on our last van because it had a slatted piece that pulled out to make the bed but on our van before that you used the table as the bed base and that would always be damp in the morning so we used to put a towel underneath. If you have it in storage with the cushions it is a good idea to stand them on their end away from the walls so that the air can circulate to prevent damp, also if you have curtains that are bunched up with tie backs pull them closed because I found they went a bit mildewy if left bunched up as the air couldn't circulate.

To combat condensation you could drill a series of holes in the (presumably) plywood on the seats, and also fit grilles over holes in the front of the bases, this would allow more air circulation.

I think you can be pretty certain that this is condensation. Where you say you can feel damp is not directly connected to the outside like for example the walls of the van, which from time to time you even get condensation on those. Just think how your car windows get when you get inside for the first time on a cold morning. Condensation normally occurs when a surface is warmer than it's reverse side.

We had condensation last time we used the van on the walls at the top of the wardrobe. Warm air was rising from the heater and condensating on the wall because it was cold and wet outside.

I feel you have nothing to worry about and if your van bed does not have a slatted base, it might be a good idea to replace the solid panels with slats.

Having said all that, it is advisable to mop up condensation as and when you get it, as there are many surfaces in caravans that are not waterproof - the inner walls for instance. Even your shower cubicle would not last very long if you were not to dry the walls after a session.
