How do we stand legally with a set in the caravan, do I need another? Also do you think the same rules apply if I am using my laptop and phone to watch the bbc news when I am away from the house.
There would be somebody at home using the house set while I'm away

If it's a tourer, boat or other moveable residence then it's covered by the one at home whether or not someone else is using the TV at home.
But if it is a "mobile home" - i.e. a static - then it is only covered by the home licence if the TV at home is not in use and you have to notify the TV licence people accordingly..

I had a very heated debate with the TV Licencing people trying to tell me I needed a second licence for my static, even though I assured them that I was only able to be in one place at one time. My neighbour at the site told me the following week that there had been a detector van on the car park during the week - no doubt he was checking up on me! After phoning and asking to speak to someone higher up, I now have a letter confirming what I already knew - you do not need a licence for a tourer/boat and only for a static caravan if someone is using the home set at the same time.
If you have a static caravan, mobile home or moveable chalet, and it has a TV which is used at the same time as a TV set is being used in your main licensed home - you'll need a separate licence to cover your second home.
However, if the TV in your static caravan or mobile home is never in use at the same time as your TV at your main home, you don't need a separate licence. But you do need to complete a declaration form and return it to us so that we can update our records.
If you use a set-top box with a hi-fi system or another device that can only be used to produce sounds and can't display TV programmes, and you don't install or use any other TV receiving equipment, you don't need a TV Licence.
If you watch or record TV programmes in a second home which is a touring caravan or vehicle, or a boat, you do not need a separate TV Licence; you will be covered by the TV Licence for your main residence.
Thanks for that, TekkieAnne. I misread the wording under "Do I need a licence for any other type of home?". Isn't it typical of government legislation, though?
Under "Do I need a licence for my mobile home or caravan?" it seems to indicate that you do, IF your main home TV is in use at same time. And why mention "caravan" here, when it is covered by another heading further down?
But under "Do I need a licence for any other type of home?" it seems to exempt caravans and certain other units, but it does not clarify if this is the case when your main home TV is being used at the same time. Could it then revert to the clause under the first heading?
As usual, plenty of scope for a jobsworth to catch us out either way.
My home is 100 miles away from my static or tourer. Enjoy the trip if you want to check whether the kids are using the TV at home. Told you it is a no brainer!
i have just got my daughter a licence for her halls of residence at uni in lincoln,i think its a rip off, 6 students in one block all have to pay, wot a rip OFF,bbc ive sh-t them

With so many repeats on the TV, I think we should be entitled to just update our existing licences by amending the date. What's wrong with a "repeat licence" for repeat programmes?
