Woke up this morning and went to turn on the gas for the hot water, nothing! Switched on the hot plates, nothing. Went and checked outside and the gas bottle and regulator were gone! During the night some low life had come along and cut through the feed to the 19kg bottle which connected on the outside of the caravan and nicked them. They didn't even disturb the 4 dogs in the caravan. The bottle was almost full as we had used it only 6 times for cooking having collected it on the previous Friday. Obviously we were being watched as the bottle stood disconnected outside the caravan for a whole week. This is supposed to be on what is rated as a 5 star caravan site and is probably well known to a number of you.

I am now considering purchasing one of those cable alarms where one can hook up a number of items as we also have our satellite dish outside and the water barrells. Probably also buy a small safe to install somewhere in the caravan but I don't know where there is a spot where it can be fixed down onto the chassis to prevent removal of the whole safe. Any suggestions overall?

PS.
Just tried to fit the new regulator onto the hose and what a palavar! I tried Fairy liquid, cooking oil and also some cream as no vaseline in the caravan. Got it partly on and the used a clamp to really tightened it up. However on the weekend in the daylight I guess I will need to take it off again and see if I can push it on further. The new gas bottle, a 13kg is now safely in the front locker so if they go for that it will make quite noise when opening the front locker cover. I can only hope!
Got the cable alarm so if they try to nick the satellite dish and tripod they may get a bit of a fright. It's bloody loud!

It's not only the loss but the damn inconvenience as well when someone does something like this.

Any chance of finding out who did it?  Are there many on site at the moment?

What I would like to call these scumbags isn't printable! Do you think it could be "travellers"?

This site is situated quite far off any public road and is near the River Severn in the West Midlands.  About 3 years ago UKCS had its national rally at this site.  As it is unlikely the thieves could sell on the gas bottle and regulator I have to assume that they stole it for personal use and it is another caravanner.  I do not think it was travellers as it is not an area they frequent.  I have a funny feeliong that it is someone from the statics on site and they knew trhat the bottle had been filled recently as the bottle stood unattached outside the caravan for a week but it was empty.  A`19kg bottle is not the easiest bottle to carry around.

The acting warden wasn't even bothered almost as if it was an every day occurence.  Unfortunately for him I know the owner of the site and will in passing mention the warden's attitude to him.  Even a "gee whiz I am sorry it happened" would have been better than the brush off.

Cost us £50 to replace said items and another £28 for a cable alarm as I did not fancy losing the satellite dish tonight!

Spend another couple of pounds on a can of spray paint - the most obvious and lurid colour you can find.

Then, carefully mark anything you think might be "taken" either obviously as a complete deterrent or surreptitiously so that it might still be stolen but at least you'll be able to identify it to a police officer and the next thieving toe rags at least gets his knuckles rapped!

We have 2 of those cable alarms as we used to keep the gas bottle outside, had one for gas bottle and aqua roll/wastemaster and one for the bikes. We have been on sites when the above items have gone "walkies".

We always use two 6kg bottles of gas and they are in the front locker, but we always secure the Aquaroll and Wastemaster to the 'van and they have also got our name & address painted on them in large print.

They take Aquarolls etc because they can easily sell them on e-bay or at car boots, gas bottles as well, but I think Surfer is right on this one that it was a fellow caravanner which is what makes it so shocking..

Electrify the perimeter of your pitch, that'll stop 'em or else set up an infra red beam that when broken sets off an alarm.

How can fellow caravanners stoop so low?

Managed to get a 13kg bottle in the front locker which will have to do until we move back to our old site.  good idea marking things but you cannot mark up a gas bottle.  Now got the satellite dish etc all hooked up on the cable alarm.

Hi surfer, does the site have 'manor' in the name? we were with friends that had an item go missing, But we found it under another seasonal van (we were on the rally field) on the other end of the site, They of course said no it's ours until we showed them the postcode melted into the item with a soldering iron....We should have called the police i guess but the sight of his mrs trying to find a rock to hide under was very amusing...

Correct!  There are only 6 other caravans and 2 motor homes on site at present and we are fairly far apart.  I can definitely eleiminate 3 of the caravanners but the others I have no contact with however I strongly suspect that it was some one from one of the statics on site.  A caravanner probably would have had a spanner readily availiable to remove the regulator
