hi, i am looking at a used caravan tommorow afternoon in view to buy and wondered if is possible to hpi or check out on a sunday afternoon? Any help or telephone numbers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Gary
Welcome to UKCS. Make sure you also have your damp meter with you (and that it has fresh batteries), check the floor feels solid, be on the lookout for vans damaged in last year's floods, and that you know what your car can safely and comfortably tow.
we bought a challenger and found the number was not right.turns out it had been stolen and they had tried to alter the chasis number.hpi told us to tell the police.-which we did not.we took it back to the person who sold it us and got our money back---we were very lucky i know.
the police would have taken it off us and we would have lost everything.i did report it after though.
We almost got caught. Found out through a CRiS check that there was oustanding finance on the van we were hoping to buy. Asked the sellers about it who offered to put it in writing that we owned the van and they would keep up the payments. Wasn't happy so checked out our rights with Consumer Direct who said that because its on HP, the van belongs to the finance company and so the people who were trying to sell the van had no legal right to sell. Needless to say, we withdrew our offer and pointed out what was said to us. The irony was that if we had not done a CriS check and therefore didn't know about the HP, then if the van was repossessed from us by the bank we would have been legally protected. Because we knew about the outstanding finance, we wouldn't have been. But then if we hadn't had a CRiS check, we may have bought a stolen van or a write off. We've got our first van now, but we were glad we did our 'homework' about the do's and don'ts' of buying!!!
Thanks for all your help on this, all the comments were very useful and i purchased the van today after having had a cris check. The hpi(cris check) did say that the current owner had not reg'strd the van, he had only bought it in june and i see the purchase invoice with his payment methods, ie; p/x his old van, part pay on debit card and some cash, so it all seemed to stack up. The van was bought from a dealer by this chap but there was no reg doc. Am i right in thinking that if i send my £12.00, register the van with cris,i will receive a new reg doc? It seems that the modern day caravans, unlike the old ones we have had do have a reg doc just like a car. Once again, thanks for your comments in advance! Gary.
