I am sorely tempted by the Caravan Guard winter sale price I have been quoted, although Adrian Flux can match it and seem to have better cover. Caravan Club are nearly £50 more expensive, but they seem to know more about the caravan and asked more questions than the other two.

Caravan Magazine rated CC as their top insurer, but £50 is alot of money!

I am looking for good or bad feedback on these and other insurers to help me decide in the next few days.

£234 for a 2003, £10K Burstner 530TL, is that good or bad??

My Burstner is insured by the Caravan Club.

The price they have quoted you seems to be "pro rata" to what I pay.

I found the club were not so "fussy" in the requirements of the insurance.

i.e Either a hitch lock or Wheel clamp, both not required, Alarm not required etc.

I think from previous threads on here the CC insurance is very popular and people who have had to claim seem very satisfied with the response etc.

excuse my ignorance, but that term goes over my head in that context.

Hi Chewie, we have same model and same year Burstner as you. We are paying £150.00 with caravan guard ( this was from august 2007). we have alarm, wheel clamp, hitch lock and a tracker fitted and that brought the cost down. Hope that helps.

OK, my dog is not a Burstner so I don't know how relevant this will be - actually, I do and it's not at all but I'm really pleased so wanted to share this!

Our lab / collie cross is 13 years 8 months old and has been insured by Tesco for years.  The most recent renewal took the monthly premium to £32.48 - that's more than we spend insuring our house!!!

He's only ever been to the vet 3 times for treatment in all those years - once because some muppet let their dog attack him and he got a cut around one eye, once to have a lump removed which turned out to be just a fatty lump so nothing to worry about, and once because he'd been in kennels and couldn't stop sneezing when he came out - turned out they'd used a grooming powder on him and he was allergic to it.

He gets all his vaccinations every year and is micro-chipped.  We'd never claimed on the insurance but it had gone up by over 200% over the years.

Called the Caravan Club yesterday - at least as good cover - £17.38 a month!!!!  How pleased am I?  We were thinking we'd not insure him and just try to put away the money each month so it was there if he ever needed any treatment but we were worried about not having the other protection that insurance provides, and that we'd find something else to spend the money on, so we're so relieved that he'll still be covered.  This means the CC membership has paid for itself on this alone, never mind anything else.

Anyway, sorry to have hi-jacked your thread, Chewie, and I do hope you get good cover for your Burstner at a decent price.

Cheers,

I've just changed our insurance to caravan gaurd, Got a quote from them and whilst not the cheapest they discounted further to match other quotes, We bought our van new last year and have had it insured on a new for old basis, when I got the renewal this year the sum insured was the same as last year, however Elddis have upgraded the avante range to the avante club and have increased the list price accordingly, when I contacted the insurance company to increase the sum insured I was told I couldn't, every other insurance company I contacted agreed the list price of the replacement club version was the price I should be insured for as this would be the replacement caravan should the worst happen, if my previouse insurance company had their way I would have been under insured. If you have caravan insurance on a new for old basis make sure the sum insured is enough to replace your van should the need arise especially if your insurance is with sheild.

As our van is bang on the 5 year old mark I will be insuring at Market Value. The replacement Burstner would be £15,000 to buy, New for Old, and so I am basically paying to insure my van at £5,000 over the value  just so I would get a new model if the worst should happen.

Caravan Guard are considerably cheaper than CC, but is the extra £50 worth it if CC are as good as people say they are?

Its as people say you only find out how good your insurance is when you come to make a claim. If you check through the polices and they both offer the same cover with the same excess personally I would save the fifty quid, Its not as though Caravan Gaurd aren't well known and the fifty quid is a few nights away in the van.

My Burstner bought new in 2007 is insured through the CC as previously stated.

We insure it through the super 5c's new for old, including contents awning etc etc was £320.

I shopped around at the time of purchase and the overall package cost was not bettered by anyone.

I say this as some insurers required wheel clamp, hitchlock, Tracker and alarm!

The CC only required either wheelclamp or hitch lock!

I rest my case.

Dave

We also bought a brand new Burstner  in 2007 and insure ours with Caravan Guard.

One reason was we were already with them but they were competitive and the easiest to use and yes due to the value of our van & accessories being over £17K they did insist on a Tracker being fitted as well as hitchlock, wheelclamp and we have put an alarm on it as well. Having fitted all of these we did get quite a discount on the premium and have a new for old policy for 10 yrs I believe.

I don't doubt that the CC does a good policy too and its great that they don't insist on a Tracker but the downside to them is that you can only use their insurance if you are a CC member which we aren't and don't really want to be so that ruled them out for us I'm afraid.

True - but then again, I saved the CC subscription several times over when I insured my 2006 Burstner S500TS with them  (compared with C&CC insurance which was nearly £700!!).

Why do insurance quotes vary so widely for comparable policies. I've just paid £275 for oue Elddis avante with Caravan gaurd but had quotes of over £400 from NFU how can they justify such a difference.

Chewie,
A pro rata premium is basically proportionate. So, if you wanted a quote for 60 days cover it would be the annual premium divided by 365 days of the year x 60. Hope this makes sense!
