I have just bought a new Bailey Senator 6 Wyoming and subsequently discovered that a few campsites ban Caravans over 7 metres long.  Has anyone had problems with this i.e. been turned away after you have booked etc.

We previously had a Pageant Moselle which was 7.1 metres in length and stayed many times at one of these sites which apparently will not accept our new van at 7.8 metres.

I wouldn't tell them. I've never seen a site manager out with a tape measure, just make sure you back it onto the pitch as far as possible so it doesn't stick out.

my mate has.he booked a site through select sites in France, a week later got notified they had cancelled the booking due to the caravan being too long and a dislike of twin axle vans on site. was left with a choice of just 4 sites via select sites as many of the others dont want large twin axles on site

Thanks LDKO I was working around to a similar conclusion - but if there are any "Jobsworths" about you can guarantee I'll find them

Some sites don't allow vans over 7 metres long simply because the access to the site is restricted and you may have problems getting in or out. I don't think it is a case of actually "banning" them.

Some site owners are becoming a bit anti-twin axle.  Last year, the owner of a site we visited regularly was grousing because a twin axle van had been turned on the grass, and it was churned up a bit.  He had a mixture of hard standing and grass pitches. Only about 3 hard standings were long enough for twin axle vans.  He said if these were occupied, he would not allow twin axles on his grass.  He asked the type of van at time of booking.  I know him well enough to state that, if someone lied to him about the van, they would stand no chance of getting onto a pitch; booked or not.

Bertie.

When you say over 7 metres long does that include the total length with hitch or just the caravan length?

Hi, we have exactly the same caravan!  I do think thought that it is only slightly longer by about 12 - 18 inches than the single axle we had before (lunar Freelander).  We have been on a CC site and when I rang and told them the length etc, they were fine about it.  We are booked for France this summer and have used the CC to make the booking, and this is (so far) fine!  The ferry seems ok too - after all they take massive lorries and trailers.

We were really bothered about not being able to get on sites due to the comments we had heard, but so far, when booking in advance, we have not had a problem.  We do have the motormover but have only been on hardstandings so far, so havent churned up anyone's pitch!  We are rallying later in March on a field so we will have to see how it works then.

I do take on board though, that some sites have restricted access, so I think this may be a consideration for some of them, rather than them not wanting us on site.  I am a natural worrier, and am bothered about the French site, but hubby says it will be fine - so no doubt it will be - I'm not going to argue (for a change - lol).

I do hope that we dont come across too many problems with the length otherwise we will be very restricted on our holidays.

Nicky

Thanks NickyHJ - ever since the children left home my mind searches for other things to worry about and has alghted on this.

So far the only site we seem to have a problem with is the closest one to us which we use for short weekend breaks, so it would be a shame to lose it, but I suppose we will have to see what happens

With regard to length, some of the receptionists you talk to, say it's the Caravan body length, and others think it is the shipping length.  Maybe I could plead ignorance - I'm sure they'd believe that when they see me

The twin axles are more likely to be a problem than the length. Twin axles is obvious when you look at the van. Predjudice to them is understandable too, considering the damage they do to the ground when turning in a muddy field. In all honesty, I struggle to see the point in twin axles when you can have similar size vans with single axles and they are lighter.
If you are asked about the length, quote the internal length and plead ignorance.

There is only one CC site (Braithwaite Fold on Windermere) that will turn you down, but you will get a warning for several others.

Twin Axles are far steadier on the road especially motorways. We always look to book hard standing where applicable.
