We have taken the decision to change our van in the next couple of months and plummed for a Hobby, in the main for the quality associated with the German brand. We are not going for a gigantic double axle job but a single axle 495uk of 540uk. Both vans are within my cars' towing capability and the vans are within the legal towing width.

Our question is, even though it's not a gipo sized van and that we don't drive a transit pick up with poor grade tarmac battered all over it, will we meet with the prejudice usually levied on Hobby's ie. scome campsites refusing to have you on? Are they comparable to insure as say my current Sprite or are they subject to a higher theft risk?

I don't care what peoples perceptions are but don't want a van that has limited use!

CC will insure you no problem.  And with a smallish single axle you should have no problems on sites.

The Hobbys are good quality, but they don't offer us, personally, what we want in terms of bathroom space.

We have owned two Hobby's and have never met with any prejudice from anyone. I really don't know where all these tales come from.

Our vans were both bought new in Germany with the door on the wrong side. When we booked a site we always told them and said we would make sure the awning faced the right way, which usually meant putting the van in towbar first.  We towed one with a Granada and the other with a Volvo estate.

There was never any attempt made to steal them, nor did we ever get any strange looks. In fact, we often got people admiring them.

No problems with insurance either.

Enjoy your Hobby  -  and stop worrying!

A friend of mine has a Hobby and has never had any problems with insurance or sites turning him down. He travels alone though and has had the occasional site that won't accept single occupants no matter what caravan they are in.

We have also had 2 hobbies including the 2.5m wide one which we always stored and used on the continent. Both bought online from separate German caravan dealerships. We have travelled all over (so to speak) and we have never ever been subjected to funny looks, been refused on site or had any problems. They also have a great range of interior layouts to chose from. Good choice - go for it!

I also have a Hobby 2 years now, no problems to report, insurance can be an issue, but try Saga if you are of that age.

When we bought our van we were impressed by hobbys, but the car we had then wouldn't have towed one.  The other thing was that the ones at the dealers all seemed to be fixed bed and we wanted a four berth with rear bunks to put kids to bed early.  They look really nice vans though.

I have a 2007 Hobby 540uk, Insured with c&cc never had any problems with being turned away, tow with a nissan terrano and my hubby (who does the driving) says he doesn't even notice were towing unlike our old van

Perfect van can't think of anything I dislike we used it loads over the winter months and the quality of the build was fab we were never cold!
