Do you mean the real stuff - sold through fuel depots - or the unofficial stuff, where you see a guy tipping a 40 litre drum of cooking oil into his car, topped up with a couple of tablespoons of ?/xxx???x ..xx?.w..t.?    We see a person local to us doing the latter in his Skodia Octavia, regularly, and it doesn't seem to cause him a problem!  Then there's the 'second-hand' cooking oil scenario - where filtered chip-fat is used - I've also seen that (and smelled it).  The only problems that I've heard of are:

1.  Being found out - they can get you for tax evasion.

2.  That cars can be more difficult to start in very cold weather.

3.  The smell from the third option!

You can buy books on how to 'brew' your own - from eco-type places.

Bio-diesel is alright in a old Diesel engine, but don`t try this in a new engine, you`ll bugger it up.And it`s not that cheaper for the amount of times you`ll have to change your fuel filter

Below is info from Pure fuels website, we have just started to run our Hilux Surf on a mix of 20% veg oil 80% normal diesel. There is no tax to pay on the veg oil as fuel as long as you will not be using more than 2500 litres per year

Any Vehicle Modifications Required To Use Biodiesel?

Most modern diesel vehicles (made since 1995), require no modifications to start using biodiesel. However, it is possible that one of two minor part replacements will be required shortly after you first start using biodiesel. Whether these apply to your vehicle(s) depends on their age and manufacturer: Replacement of fuel filter shortly after starting to use biodiesel (not before) Replacement of rubber fuel hoses with synthetic/plastic hoses Most manufacturers now endorse the use of biodiesel up to at least 10% blends – for example Citroen now officially support the use of biodiesel blends up to B30 (30%).

Fuel Filter Replacement

The potential need to replace your vehicle's fuel filter shortly after starting to use biodiesel is due to one of the fuel's more beneficial qualities. Unlike mineral diesel, it does not cause a gradual build up of deposits within the fuel system, and where such deposits exist, the solvent properties of biodiesel cause them to break down. Starting to use biodiesel tends to have a cleansing effect on the engine, leading to the freed deposits gradually clogging the fuel filter, leaving it in need of replacement rather sooner than usual. Once the initial cleansing effect has completed, normal service rules apply for the replacement of the fuel filter.

Replacement of Rubber Fuel Hoses

Biodiesel's chemical composition means that on some older vehicles, which have rubber fuel hoses, the hoses can start to degrade. This issue can be resolved by simply replacing the hoses concerned with more modern synthetic (plastic) hoses. On many newer vehicles, these hoses will already be made of biodiesel-compatible materials, so this will not be an issue.

Seem Bio fuel is not altogether environmentally friendly.  In order to produce enough they have to kill off wildlife.

I think there might be more of us trying this option in view of the Chancellor's hike in Excise Duty, and current fuel prices.  Watch the VAT on fuel filters rise in the next budget!!!

Duty evasion is not an issue if you use less than 2500 litres per annum.

Can be more difficult to start and can also damage filters, pump and injectors if not adequately filtered.

The smell is no worse than that of regular vegetable oil from the supermarket.

Working in a garage, I have seen a few cases to make me a bit wary of using it. Mainly the problems we get are with newer cars with high pressure fuel systems, the usaul problems are clogging up the fuel lines (not just the fuel filters, they only need slight drops in pressure to give problems, even non start!), and also if the vehicle is fitted with a catalytic converter (in exhaust) they are prone for clogging up with a fatty film resulting in a gradual lose of power untill the vehicle will hardly pull its own weight let alone a caravan! A friend of mine found this out with his van and had to replace the complete exhaust from the cat back, expensive! But the worst case we have had is the high pressure pump (driven off engine), siezing up due to lack of lubrication, resulting in timing belt breaking causing an expensive bill for an engine rebuild! But as a said not really had problems with older (mechanical fuel pumps), other than clogging filters etc....

How can you possibly prove you have used less than 2,500 litres a year?  More to the point, how can the authorities prove you have?  If you use more than 2,500 litres and by some remote possibility, get caught, can they charge you duty on it as if it were fuel bought at the pumps?

This seems to be a stupid rule and almost impossible to enforce.  Are they going to police the aisles at Tesco and Aldi?

Just wish mine would run on it but I don't think it will without doing damage to the fuel pump and fuel lines.
