Hi ,we have a 1987 compass echo which now has only one indicator working with no tail lights or brake lights. Have checked car socket and replaced the caravan socket.

have been told it could be a bad earth. has anybody got any idea where to check.

Classic earth fault symptoms. If you are certain the car socket is good and you made sure you had good clean copper wire at the ends when you re-connected the plug then the next thing is to remove the rear light clusters and check for rusty earth connections. You could pull the spade connectors off one by one and clean the contacts with sandpaper. Once all the connections are shiny and clean you should be good to go! If still no luck then there is maybe a dodgy joint in the cable somewhere between the plug and the lights.
