We are thinking of buying new van, considering double dinette as opposed to fixed bed. There are only the two of us, with this layout thought we could make bed up at one end and use other end for living space. This would still give us the option to have seats up if we wanted.
Been considering Avondale 510/5 or Bailey 500/5. Funnily enough all vans with this layout seem to be 5 berth. We dont need the bunk lol. Just feel fixed bed takes up a lot of space.
Yes we are thinking this layout as well and sometimes we are own our own but sometimes take our grandchildren with us. Have you looked at the Swift or Sterling

This is the layout we have and it does allow for a great deal of flexibility. but unless you are very short, you have to sleep across the van, which means the person nearest to the wall has to crawl over the other person to exit the bed.
We did look at a double dinette version, at the Manchester show, which allowed both people to sleep in line with the van, but it turned out to be a twin axle.
Thinking about it; 6'3" at either end, and all the services in the middle would make for a long van. We still prefer this layout though, but it is all down to personal choice.
Happy hunting,
Jim.
We have a Bailey Moselle with side dinette and L shaped lounge there is only 2 of us and what we do is never make up the bed. One of us sleeps on the couch across the van at the front and the other sleeps on the bunk at the side dinette. No having to make our unmake beds it saves so much hassle. Unless you particularly want to be cosy and share a bed. Then the poor person on the inside gets to climb over the other to get in and out of bed.
Works for us.

I've a old 4 berth with a double dinette. Now usually there are three of us, myself and 2 children, so me and the toddler sleep in the front and my older son has the rear. Sometimes it's just me and my little daughter, and depending what we're doing for day I'll leave the bed up. If the weather's not so good I'll put it down so we've more room to play inside, either way the layout works really well for us.
We've looked at newer vans, fixed beds included, but I don't find putting the bed up any problem and would rather have the extra space to play than a luxury bedroom.
We also have this layout, standard 5 berth layout with an L shaped diner at the rear. There is also a sliding door to pull across and close off the rear double,if you want to (which we never do) but this door is also useful to create private a changing area when the bed is put away).
Works well for us but it's everybody to their own. Personally I don't like fixed beds as they take up too much space during the day and when there are 4 of you in a van, you need the room in the daytime. At least with this layout you have a choice - leave down the bed and screen if off during the day, or put it away and have the extra space. Its very flexible.
We are on our second van with this layout. Our first van was an Avondale Dart 510/5 and we thought we could use the back as a double, but at 3'9" wide it was too narrow for comfort, and the front parallel seats at 5' 11"were too short for singles so we ended up making the front double up every time. We now have a Lunar Quasar 525, the back dinette makes a decent 4' 3" wide double, the front parallel seats are 6' 2" long which are long enough for us to use as singles. The Lunar Zenith Five is the same size as the Quasar 525, has the same size seats and is also light weight like the Dart. During the winter we don't use our awning so we like to have full use of all the van during the day, we use the rear dinette for a jigsaw lol, eating or just for a sit n chill and look out of the rear window for a change, then when its bedtime we just chuck a single sleeping bag on each of the front 6' 2" parallel seats. During the summer when it's warm enough to use the awning we make the rear dinette up as a permanent double and use a king size duvet just like home.

Although there are only two of us we find that the 5 berth option is excellent having a small and a large double bed We used to sleep together but, more and more, as we get older find trhat jumping over one another during the night is a no no, so we use both beds and both get a good nights sleep We have the Coachman Amara 500/5 and find it an excellent 'van. I find trhat it takes next to no time to make the beds up and it does give a great flexibuklity during the day. Not only that it also has a lovely rear window and not a blank end so we have an all round view
We have very recently changed to this lay out, only been away at easter. Its a compass omega but we love it found the option of leaving the bed up brilliant. at first my OH wanted the fix bed but he loves this option as theres just the two of us, but sometimes myniece and nephew come with us.
We bought an 1992 Lunar Clubman 5 berth 1992 (even though there is only 2 of us)5years ago and liked it so much when we went for a new van we bought an Omega Compass 505 with an L shaped lounge this van is excellent as there is more space at the front, we often leave the back bed down if we are going out for the day
Snap! we have only just purchased a Bailey Provence 5 berth
just for the 2 of us! as we wanted the flexibility of not having to make the bed up if we didn't want to. Spent easter in the New Forest and we had enough space for my Brother and sister in law to stay over night.
We have also taken out the bunk and stored it in the loft to some on some weight. Also lots of room if wet weather and you don't want to put up awning.I say go for it
Our swift has that layout and we love the flexibility, Before Baby arrived last year we left the back bed up and used the front as living, but when we went with friends we can pack the back bed away and use the space up there to put stuff and the table for extra food prep area!
We love ours, as its got the 5 berth option as we take our friends kids with us aswell as our own, including our 3 dogs and ample room, We also have the seperate walk in shower cubicle in ours which we find invaluable!
Now that baby has taken over we put the bunk up to store all the bedding etc and turn the one sofa into a cot with a bed bumper, works brilliant!
For us the flexible space was better as you say the fixed bed is very nice but takes up room and generally have a smaller washroom, I can honestly say for us I feel this is the only layout that would work after spending years looking at so many vans!

Thanks everyone for your replies, has definately made me more decided on this layout. Can leave hubby sleeping on couch up top end when he has had too much to drink and have bed at bottom to myself lol
