Advice wanted from owners of TA caravans. Is it easy enough to get Insurance cover for a twin axle van? or are some companies not interested in providing cover. Is it much more expensive than a single axle van? Do the insurance companies ask for more stringent security measures than just a wheel clamp and hitch lock.
Still swithering between new TA or SA, decisions, decisions
doesnt really make a great deal of difference i have found. some insurance companies see twin axles are more stable on the road but are more of a risk to the light fingered brigade. we wouldnt have a single axle.

We've recently ordered a Twin Axel, I rang my current insurance company (C&CC) to ask about insuring a twin axel, and they said it's just down to the value of the van. Not the number of axels. Certainly the provisional quote they gave me wasn't too much more than our current van.
Thanks for the replies so far, its good to know that there shouldn.t be a big change in price for insurance. Just to change the thread slightly, do most TA owners have motor movers fitted, if so what kind?
i thought about getting a twin axle and got a couple of quotes online before hand. I got the impression they wouldn't insure me if i kept it at home unless it had a tracker on. The difference in price wasnt that much different though, just needed a tracker or had to be kept in a CASSOA storage site.
The CC will insure you, only requirements are a hitchlock, but the more security you have the cheaper it is. The premium depends on the value you need to insure for.
The cc will not insure our twin axle caravan even though it has hitchlocks, wheel clamps , locking wheel nuts chains and locked in a place with laser beam security as well as alarms, so whats all that about then? !!!!!
The CC is a law-abiding organisation and so quite naturally, it's not interested in insuring a caravan which is almost certainly being towed illegally.
Quite frankly, bearing in mind how keen insurance companies are to evade paying out on a claim whenever they can find an 'excuse', I would think you're leaving yourself wide open to that scenario when in the event of a claim, they then discover that the van is being towed on the road illegally!!
Interestingly, linda ling only mentions the van in her details, with no mention of the towing vehicle!!
never had any problems with our T/A insured with Crusader , have a front towbar fitted to our car in case we meet any awkward reversing situations , but we dont really need that now ,since we had the grass alongside our drive block paved
If you tow a caravan wider than the legal width allowed on British roads and you have an accident then it is more than likely the insurance company won't cough up. It is up to you to make sure you are within the law, not the insurance company. The CC won't insure these vans anyway.
It is NOT illegal to tow a caravan wider than 2.3m on British roads. It is illegal if the towing vehicle is under 3501kgs so maybe Linda does not have a problem.
IMHO it is a ridiculous law because if you are from the continent you can legally tow a 2.5 with a vehicle under 3500kgs.
Caravan Guard weren't bothered about the number of axles, only the value of the van. They insisted that we had a tracker fitted though. We've also got the 2 Alko wheel clamps as well as the Alko hitchlock, and there is a (now working) burglar alarm. And if anyone can get through that lot and get it through the overhead barrier on site, they're welcome to it!! Its new for old anyway for the first 5 years.
Just insured ours no problem, did find a couple of companies via comparison site that dont insure twin axles.Cost us £175 for £8500 worth of cover. The only conditions were hitch lock/wheelclamp when its unhitched and wheel clamp when its parked hitched to vehicle which I think is industry standard for all caravans.Got discount for having PIR Tilt sensor alarm and being a member of UKCS! And this renewal gave me upgrade of protected NCD for reinsuring with them. One Quote Direct.
No we dont have motor mover but we have plenty of space to turn ours round. You wouldnt push it on your own!
