You need to make sure there is no damp, so before you start looking invest in a decent damp meter available from B&Q and similar stores, use it inside the caravan round all the windows and all corners and along all joints, under the seats and inside the cupboards, beware of air fresheners in the van a sure sign they have some thing to hide.

In the 'feature and tips' section there's a guide to buying caravans. We only got a first van in January so we know what it's like! Best advice I could give is to take a damp meter, you can get them from B&Q, and look at lots of different ones to get an idea of the layout you prefer. Once you've decided on a layout, it's easier to narrow the choices down within your budget. That;s how we did it anyway!

I'm sure others will give you better advice

Welcome to UKcampsite, Patsybaby.

Click here for tips on buying a secondhand caravan.

Perhaps if you started a thread called "Caravan storage in north Scotland" or something like that you may get more replies to do with that - afraid I haven't a clue, sorry.

Just have to agree with the others on the damp issue, the last thing you want is a van with damp (can be expensive to repair).  Are you planning on buying private or from a dealer?  With most good dealers you will get a van that should be serviced and have a warranty, so you have abit of comeback and peace of mind, although expect to pay good money for it and be prepared to have to buy extras ie water and waste containers, hook up leads, step, awning etc.

A good tip for buying private is to take someone with you that is mechanically minded (that is if you are not), as there is alot more to caravans than just the insides.  Brakes and suspension, tyres electrics etc.  Have a good look round inside and out,  Dont feel pressure into buying something you are not sure of, and above all make sure the caravan is not to heavy for the vehicle you intend to pull it with.  There are alot of nice vans out there and sometimes the owners are selling up so you can pick up a bargain with everything you will need to get started.

Another bit of advise if buying private is to get it serviced once you have bought it, just abit of piece of mind, even if it is just the gas system, pipes and connectors tend to perish on older vans.

Again dont really know of any storage in scotland, sorry!

Hope this helps, have a nice time looking and hope you get a nice one!

Mike

Why not have a quick look on http://www.cassoa.co.uk/Search.aspx for storage sites in Scotland - that should help.

Hey - someone from my part of the world!  Welcome.

Meikle Ferry site near Tain store caravans and I think Blackrock at Evanton also take a few.  Not sure where else.

You are a bit limited for buying vans up here.  We bought ours from GNR Sutherland and found them very good.  The other dealer seems to have gone back to Elgin and I haven't seen many in the local paper for a while.

If you follow the advice already given, you can't go far wrong.  For my part, I would always do things like open and shut all the windows and check that all the blinds work, lift the seat cushions and just generally make sure everything does what it should.

Good luck!

June.
