'We are going to the south of france in the summer and breaking down is what worries me a bit. We are in the AA and will be getting overseas cover, but I am not sure if they will fetch us home or to nearest garage, which might charge a fortune for repairs.

You're not intending to go abroad without full holiday motoring and personal insurance cover, surely? From someone like Europ Assistance? '
As I say we will be getting full overseas cover. Its just that I am not sure whether they will bring car and van back to this country or take it to nearest repair garage on continent. I would think it is cheaper to get repaired here. Which overseas cover is best?

Our clutch went (on a Citroen) in France - and we were towed to the nearest Citroen dealer. The clutch was repaired there, and they loaned us a replacement vehicle which we used for the whole holiday, and returned at the end when we went back to pick the car up. The repair cost us quite a bit less than it would have done in England. (We rang up for quotes from three local garages) before giving the OK for the repair to go ahead there. Check what cover your policy offers, and make sure you get what would be best for you.
We weren't towing at the time, though, but did have a roof box, and three bikes on a rear-mounted towbar. We had AA 5 star cover, and we really got a great service from them.
I think we all ought to double check out our breakdown cover, they seem to be crafty and put little details in the small print and don't bother telling us about or these sales people just want to get a sale and just brush us off with 'oh yes you are covered with caravans' and as long as they get there first payment out of us, they dont seem to care,
Then when the time comes to needing them, some just useless,
Why the car couldnt be re- covered and it doesnt matter who is driving, you have paid monies and when you have the drivers permission to use car, it is so silly . And you have breakdown cover your self.
May be they ought to change it to breakdown cover for the driver so he can be recovered in what ever car he is in,
Sounds like an absolute nightmare! However, it is nice to be reminded of how many nice people are out there and willing to help others. Sometimes you heaqr so many bad news stories in the press you forget that! I hope you get your new van soon
You poor things! I would have been tearing my hair out!
As for going on trips abroad, each time we have been and for this year, I have taken out insurance with the Caravan Club's Red Pennant scheme as this is specially designed for people towing, and all the things that could go wrong. Last year we had to phone them as our old car would not start as the battery was weak and there was some other problem with glow plugs or something. They were great, sorted a local garage to come out to us within 20 mins who diagnosed dead battery, then offered to go to the nearest stockist in a town 30kms away and bring us a new battery for a very fair cost. He fitted it free. We managed to limp home towing ok, but sold the pig of a car in part exchange for the Sorento the same week!
I'd be here all night if we mentioned some of our nightmare journeys, some of them involving going to/from UKCS meets! We joined the RAC after our run of bad luck with the Pajero Suzi, we were with Green Flag who were a complete waste of time everytime we needed them.
Thank god you liked the van, I'd have been feeling guilty if that hadn't been up to owt either though I do trust Helen, can't wait to see it!!
