I could ask you the same question; why should an owner of a large vehicle used infrequently pay more tax so people with small cars can produce more polution by doing lots more milage when they could use public transport?

I havent yet found a bus service that will tow my caravan to a site for me for our environmentaly friendly holiday whilst the small car driver spends the £200 or so on a holiday abroad.

I maybe going over the top but I bet I am not far wrong.

 

Oh and; "I still maintain that in life what you want it has to be paid for so I will leave it there and beg to differ."  I couldnt agree more, do more miles pay for more fuel, that has to be fair.

We have a small car and do the average mileage a year.it would be nice if we could use public transport to get around but that is not possible as most people know unless you are lucky in your area.Why us with small cars by the way?.I have also found that I can't find a bus that will take the wife and I to a camp site with all the camping gear for our environmently holiday the same as you plus we couldn't get to tour.Just because we do not have a caravan or motorhome we do not  go on holiday abroad in fact never have been. I have 2 motorcycles and taxed not sorn declared which I only use as and when I fancy to take out.That is what I want and prepared to pay for and see nothing wrong it that.

 I still think we pay the tax rate for the size car and not zero and put on the price of fuel. It would seem that I am on my own with this issue so will leave it there.

i have signed, i have a friend who works at a well known garage and she has said there is talk of a strike but when we dont know and for the first time i am right there with them because it effecting our lives food goes up etc its a knock on efect. also i have to travel in my job i am a maid cleaning houses working for a friend. we cannot run the car so we have a moped 50cc to travel around in cannot afford car only going on weekend away to caravan 20 mile away, any higher and i dont know what we are going to do. so u see there are people out there who really cannot afford tax on fuel just to pay the fat cats in this country.

One thing I think we all need to understand is that the increases in VED and the stupidly high levels of taxation on fuel are nothing to do with "saving the planet" and everything to do with raising income for the exchequer.  There seems little point in arguing about the fairness of VED or fuel taxation, fairness just isn't a consideration for those who impose the taxes.  The only significant issue is "Can we get away with it?". 

From the perspective of one who pays the taxes, the changes in VED seem especially pointless.  Logically, if you want to adopt the position that the polluter should pay, then it makes much more sense to put extra taxes on fuel as an incentive to be more careful in your usage.  Fortunately for some of us, this doesn't pass the "Can we get away with it" criterion - as the road haulage lobby would go ape.

I wonder how those "in power" will justify future increases in taxes on fuel & transport when the notion of the greenhouse effect and an anthropogenic cause of global warming is more widely understood and accepted to have no validity.  For those interested, this is an interesting article ... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/opinion/main.jhtml?xml=/opinion/2008/05/04/do0405.xml

The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. There are 4.55 ltrs in an imperial gallon.
