Hi left a deposit with a local dealer (North Staffs Caravans) on a van 10 days ago, unfortunately today i have found out there is a possibility i could lose my job so i have called the dealer to ask if i could possibly be refunded the £100 deposit that i paid as i expected they said no and that they will require another £200 from me to conclude the deal.
I have not signed any contract nor have they at any time supplied me with any form of terms and conditions stating that the deposit was non refundable or to state any other fees could be incurred. I was wondering if anyone could tell me where i might stand legally i certainly have no intention of paying any further funds to them i know it is not their fault but their attitude seems a little harsh given the circumstances.
I would seek advice from http://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/index/getadvice.htm . You could also ask the caravan dealer to show you the written contract ( that you didn't sign ) . Did you get a receipt for the £100 , if so what does it say on the receipt .
I always believe that you get a grace period as Custer said and then you agree you want to go ahead and sign a contract of purchase, as they dont have you signuture any where they should give you your £100 back ???? Hope you get sorted soon sorry to hear about your job.
Thx guys not certain to lose my job now in a 30 day consultation period but as it is a real risk it does not seem wise to purchase a £9000 caravan as much as i would like to. Payment of the £100 was made over the telephone and i have received no receipt stating i have paid them any amount although they have sent a letter thanking me for my order, no mention of deposits or terms and conditions though and nothing signed so i will contact citizens advice thx a lot.
If you paid by visa card contact your card supplier.

I seem to remember the situation for areements made NOT on the sellers premises used to allow the customer to withdaw from the agreement within a certain timeframe.Advise them of your intention to seek advice from your local trading standards officer & see how they respond. I
If they don't play ball, ask the CIB how you stand. I wouldn't think they'd pursue you for an unsigned agreement. Tell them we're all interested in hearing how they treat their customers. They'll know bad news travels a lot faster than good.
Same type of thing when we bought a car and didn't sign for it when we ordered it was in a rush. When we went to pick it up the sales guy was keen for us to sigh and back date it to our orded date when we ordered it. We didn't have a problem with this but he told us even though we had gone into the office to buy and paid a deposit as we hadn't signed there at the time.It would tie us into the distance selling regs and we could keep it for 30 days then take it back. I would look this up if I WAS YOU! Good luck!
