There used to be a saying 'Leaky Lunar' and we did know someone who bought a new one three years or so ago and it did leak but to be fair you can get this with any van whatever the make. So as tentmad say's take a damp meter with you, or get a signed assurance that it has had a recent damp test, if it's at a dealers and they refuse don't buy it.

We heard the saying "Leaky Lunars" from the previous owner of our caravan.

They told us that when they where looking for a caravan they where recommended to avoid Lunars as many of them have a join along the centre of the roof that is prone to leaking (the same could be said for many other makes of caravan too I suppose). I don't know if theres any truth in this, or if it's an urban myth but I'm sure somebody will let us know.

Don't let us put you off, if I  had read some of the stories on here before I bought my Bailey I would perhaps been put off, but I love it.

There are a lot of people on here that have Lunars and I am sure the will assure you wait for more replies and see, or do a search and see what comes up.

Lunar has had to get its act together and has recently bought itself from foreign influence so is england based now , the 'vans get good write-ups in the mags too .I have one and had a few problems with it but in fairness it was with the bought in items so could have applied to any make , but check the sofa/bed to see if they are firm enough they are quite soft

the real shame here is that poo sticks

leaky lunars who hasnt heard it??

but who that says it has actualy owned one??, yes a few but a tiny percentage of the band waggon jumpers who spurt it all around campsites and forums, everyone claims they know someone who had one and it leaked but ask them to actualy prove it isnt just a campfire story they are telling and are just passing on what they have heard

ok in reality yes lunars had many problems with water ingress in the past

as a result they got a bad name and lost alot of custom

due to this they have worked very hard to solve the issues and have done well , i would buy a lunar over much more expensive vans anyday believe me when you work in the trade you dont listen to camp fire gossiping chineese whisperers when it involves hard earned money , and i would advise anyone else to do the same

its like cars ford have their die hard fans as do vauxhall etc

there will always be the buy swift  or buy bailey brigade

i would like to add i have just under 10 years experience at a insurance approved caravan repair center less than 10 mins drive from lunars lostock hall factory

i have worked on many lunars as well as baileys, swifts, van royces etc etc etc

working so close to the factory and having a contract with them to work on warrenty cases you would think i spent most of my time working on lunars , you would be wrong very wrong and after spending a few days at swifts factory on training i know where i would spend my money if i ever wanted to downgrade from my massive floor space of my frame tent to a cramped tin box

and it wouldnt be going much thurther than a caravan factory 10 mins from my house believe me, but then i wouldnt pay double money for the same product due to a badge :p

choose wisely grasshopper and weigh all your options as well as look closely where you study the products you wish to buy its your money your spending not anyone elses yours .........

and a ps to lancs campers

how long ago did you buy your van ??

lunars havnt used a center capping on the roof for a good 8 to 10 years

We have a Lunar 610-4, which we purchased last year and it is 8 years old.  To date, we haven't experienced any leakage problems.  In fact, we love our van.  It has good quality fittings, feels solid (not like some of the newer ones today) and for a first van, we are very impressed.  So, I would say, go and see the Lunar - not all of them are leaky!

We have a 1993 Delta 560-4 which we bought in 2005

When we bought it we wern't very experienced and didn't check the van properly. All four corners were dry and there was no smell of damp.

It wasn't until about four months later that i found that we had big damp in the wall board around the left side front window. The whole board is spongy. Then we noticed that the front internal roof "board?" has started to sag in places, it feels like it has come unstuck from the caravan frame

There is a join that runs from side to side accross the front roof of the van and it had lifted on the left side. This is obviously where the water was coming in.

I have used something called Caratape to seal the lifted join as we can't afford to have this seen to professionally. This seems to have done the trick as the damp hasn't got any worse.

Despite this, we love our van. The rest of the van is bone dry (according to my retrospectivly bought damp meter). The layout is exactly what we wanted and apart from my water heater (which i will get around to doing eventually) everything works as it should.

I will pluck up courage to change the wall board one day, but until then we shall just carry on having fun and not let it bother us

Hi I had a Lunar Delta 5 berth (forget which model now because we sold it 3 years ago).

We were looking for a cheap family caravan and bought it privately from the local papaer.  To be fair I could smell damp but my husband could'nt.  He was the one with the cash and he bought it despite my concerns.

I was right! and it did have damp all across the back of the caravan from under the rear lights! massive repairs had to be carried out but we got it sorted.

I am looking for a caravan now  (divorced my husband !  not because of that tho!!!)and would avoid a lunar because I know how stressful it can be when you spend your hard earned cash and end up with a leaking caravan.

Going on holiday can be an expensive time and it is crushing when you have not got much money to spend and you have to try and sell the damp caravan on to someone else and make a huge loss.  Be careful.

It was a 1993 model.  and it was 2005 when we bought it, so it was fairly old.

Hope this helps.

Jo.

Go on listen to the leaky Lunar people dont buy one also dont buy a Skoda car as people will till you they are cr+p,

Wellthe best van we have ever had is our Lunar 'Delta ( we have owned 8 vans) been all over Europe just back from France no problems we have also done  lots of Caravaning in this county with nor problems.  And as for my coment about Skoda cars we own 2 and our Octavia turned in about 37 miles towing in France on motorways when we change it will be for another Skoda.

Dont be put off take a damp meter if its the one for you you willknow straight away, there is good and bad in all vans, I have even met someone would had a damp problem with a Bailey.

Sennen

Hi

A number of year ago as well as leaky Lunars there was also soggy Swifts. I  have owned seven caravans including two Lunars and the only damp one was a Swift. I also know personaly three owners of recent model Baileys who have experienced severe water ingress problems but they are not called boggy Baileys( also look at other forums). It does seem that all makers have had issues with damp in their vans and it is unfair to describe all  Lunars as being leaky. A good damp meter will ensure the van you buy is not damp.

Sandy
