On our caravan the light clusters use smoked glass.  I have noticed that following motorists hang well back when I am towing and I suspect that is because they can't see the indicators flashing in bright sunlight.  This is confirmed as the wife is peering when we check the lights before we set off.

My question is, if I fit extra indicator lights at the back, will they upset the flasher can in the car?  Do I need to upgrade the flasher can to heavy duty?

Any motor electricians out there that can help?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Fogey

How silly is that. I bet they are sealed units so it's not as easy as changing the lens.

I know nothing about these things but just a suggestion. See how people change their head light bulbs for brighter ones. Is it possible to do that with the indicator bulbs like replacing them with an orange bulb or a brighter bulb ?

I think its down to the size of your flasher unit,some units say MAX 140 Watts,so if you dont exceed that amount of Watts it should be ok,flasher bulbs are normaly 21 Watts so if you devide 21 into 140 that seems to be 6.6 bulbs,so it would use the max when hazzards are on,4 on the car,and 2 on the caravan,may be ok on indicating with extra bulb making 4 bulb, but then you would exceed the max with hazzards on,and it could burn out,maybe someone else can help more.

do not know how old the van is,but,could you be invalidating your body warranty making holes in it to fit extra lights?

The van is 12 years old now.  I suppose smoked glass was then the vogue.  I would change the light clusters completely but I can't find a cluster that would fit the moulding on the back of the caravan.

Just thinking back a few years or so and I seem to remember that there was a fad to paint a layer on the inside of light clusters to give the appearance that they were smoked. I also seem to remember that this paint was easily removed by some substance but I can't recall what it was, I'm thinking that it was nail polish remover. Could be completely wrong but wonedring whether it could be worth a try.

We had smoked lenses and found the same.  Just swapped them for normal lenses.  They are all sealed,or ours were, so will probably need whole light.

Why not change the caravan bulbs for LED's, that way you keep the smoked look but have brighter bulbs.

Why not consider fitting a relay at the rear of the van and connect its coil to the existing supply to the rear indicator lights.Then you can run a new supply from the caravan 12v system through an open relay contact to the rear indicator lights.

This will significantly reduce the loading on the car flasher unit and will allow you to fit your extra indicator lights.
