Elvaston Park,Derby's theft activity.

Whilst visiting the above C/C park our caravan and at least 12 others were visited by a thief at the early hours of 12am to 3am and removed the pickup pipes and filters from a number of vans. My loss alone was some £88-98 excluding a journey to Shepshed for replacement parts. We reported our loss to Long Eaton police station and they informed us as we were the 12th such reports. No doubt there were possibly others that left without reporting their loss. Also the rear number plate was stolen off the caravan.

This is our first loss whilst vanning and left a bitter taste in ones mouth but will not spoil our memories of Derby's and its people. We will be more security minded in future and if it can be moved will be securely tetherd.

Happy vanning to all.   Graham R.

Happily this sort of thing seems very rare on clubsites. Its very upsetting and sad.

Not so rare as you may think!

On Scarborough C&CC site 2 years ago my tent was robbed in the middle of the night, what makes it worse was i was sleeping in the car at the time outside the tent. It was around 3 a.m. and there were around 6 units broken into i am told. Now my elder daughter will not sleep in  a tent and does not like sleeping in the awning annexe.

Sympathies with you by the way Graham, hope it does not put you off.

To Robin 52 and Bill the Bus, many thanks for your condolencies etc, but my temper had subsided by the time I'd got to Shepshed. I reported this on the UKSC web as a warning of what is happening at Elvaston and the fact that the lowlife are active in that area. They must be making a profit out of pinching so many connections of van to aquaroll because it seems a peculiar article to pinch does'nt it. They obviously have a ready market for these items to take the risk in overtime hours.

Bill your daughters experience in the tent was very scary and I dont blame her for not wanting a repeat performance and what could have happened to you if you'd awakened to the realisation at the time. We are living in the age of the knife and lowlife are prepared to use it.

We have purchashed two cycle security cables that have a lock and are plastic coated and we secure the Aquaroll and the waste water trolley to the caravan now. They are 1.8 metres in length and would have to be cut with a sturdy set of bolt croppers now. The number plate and its chrome backing plate will have to have some deeper thought.

Well thanks for your kind thoughts and note I originate from Chilwell, Stapleford, Long Eaton then emigrated from Castle Donington. Still a Nottinghamian at heart.

All the best and keep vanning safely,   Graham R.

Twinny sorry to hear about your losses, good job that you reported it as you don't know what yopur number plate will be used for .My mate had his reg. number used on a car in london and when he asked for the photo proof it was an entirely different car. After consultations with the local police and a sworn statement from his employer the case was dropped so at least you've got some proof to start with

Sorry to hear of all above experiences.
I always worry about leaving house empty for two to three weeks when I go on jollys. You certainly can do without the extra worry of keeping camping items secure from scum.
I used to have make of my car on the bottom of my number plate so if it was stolen and used on another vehicle it would look suspicious. Now you are not allowed to do that you can only have the plate manufactures details on it.
The expense is bad enough to replace stolen items, but it's the inconvenience and worry that ruins the holiday.
Hope it does not spoil the rest of your annual outings
best regards
Colin B

Twinny I am sorry to hear of your recent upset.

Not even the camping gear is safe. What is wrong with people that they have to steal things that are of no use to them and upset so many people in the process.

We are new to  caravaning but only this weekend I mentioned to hubby that I didn't like the idea of the Aquaroll water container and waste master just sat behind the caravan. His words were "I wouldn't think fellow campers would steal of others" which is right but hadn't given a thought of outsiders coming in. Anyway we have already bought the cycle security cables as mentioned above and will definately be using them.

I have a very old van and think I may never want a newer one for worry of this type of thing happening.

It's a sad and greedy world we live in now.

Sorry to hear of your bad luck, I always expect gear to be OK on CC sites. I left TV and sat reciever in awning at coniston. I think i'll be a bit more careful in future.  Someone tried to break into my flat tho'. I had just come back from park coppice, Coniston. Someone obviously noticed i was away, Couldn't catch thief. But it's made me a bit worried. I am investigating cameras which send txt & pic to mobile if triggered. Either that or a shotgun, at least it only needs to go off once

Maybe we should keep an eye on e-bay for such items. If there's a seller with numerous connections for sale maybe thats the culprit!!!!!!!!!
