Just bought ourselves a second hand Bradcot Active and are wondering if we need some storm straps for it as the site we are going to for our main holidays can be very exposed,
Have found a Bradcot Storm kit on ebay for £50 which seems very expensive. Has anyone used this? Not sure about the £6 strap from Towsure as it goes over the top of the ridge and I have heard that they can wear a hole in the roof!
What do you all use to secure your awning when the wind picks up?
I've read that some people put the awning straps under the awning so they rest directly on the frame itself, never had the need to try it ourselves, always had it over the top of the awning and never caused any holes in it.

If you put one across the top of your awning try putting a tea towel under the points it is likely to rub then it will still be tight against the awning but will only rub the tea towel :)
We put our cheap strap under the awning canopy at the front, between the canvas and the poles, directly against the frame. You'll find that if you put it over the top of the canvas it will 'drum' if there is a high wind, and drive you absolutely mad.
We only have it on when high winds are likely - and it has saved our awning, when others around have been damaged.
We put a cheap strap over but where it makes contact with the frame either side I put the things that you put round your seat belts in cars (if you know what I mean). A couple of years ago in bad winds ours was the only awning still standing onsite. I swear by mine.

Thanks for the tip, it drives me mad when they rap in the strong winds.
Like others we have a basic strap, bout £8 i think, over the top of the awning just behind the flap.
If your Bradcot Active awning has the steel poles you should be alright but if it has the Easy System aluminium poles, Bradcot advise that you do not use storm straps.
Thanks guys, we have the steel poles so think that we will buy a cheap strap and give that a go. I think that we will put it over the top, as if we put it inside I'm not sure how we would peg it out as it would be trapped inside the canvas or am I missing a point? New to all of this!!!
Like the idea of the seat belt protectors - will try and find a couple of them to use.
We have the Bradcot fibre poles, and use a 'Royal' storm strap kit, which is secured inside the awning, going up under the awning but over the end upright poles - had this setup at Damage Barton last year and it worked a treat despite howling gales for several nights. If you put the strap outside, and damage is caused to the awning, Bradcot will not repair under your warranty. Sounds like most people who use this method don't have too many problems in that respect, but I'd rather not take a chance!!

What if the Hokey Cokey really is what it's all about....?

It's a bit of a nuisance, but we banged the peg in almost next to the upright end pole (inside the awning) with the strap going up the upright pole, and then over the joint with the horizontal poles. The Royal kit comes with three seperate straps, so one for each upright - does the job peachy!!

OK now I'm confused. Is it best to have one long strap which goes across the whole awning, either next to the poles or over the fabric? Or is it better to have 3 separate straps for each upright, holding each of the 3 horizontal poles down?
I've found both type of kit on ebay and am wondering which one to buy. Your advice would be appreciated!
Mine is the long strap that goes over the awning, there has to be some give in it thats why there is a coiled spring on the end near the peg. Like I said mine has neve failed me and the awning was left on a seasonal pitch in all weathers 3 seasons ago and its still going strong, no rips or tears (touch wood)
