Whilst away last weekend we were pitched next to a Silvercrest12.2 Caravan made by Silverline. Speaking to the owners they told me it was a 1988 model. and the company was no longer in existance. It was in really good condition. I was intrigued as I had never heard of Silverline.
Does any Member of UKCS own oneof these vans and does anyone know when they went out of production.
------------- Don't know where I'm going but will be happy when I get there.
no, but there was (is?) one on ebay last few days. I couldn't believe how modern the front of it looked for a late 80's van. It looked like one from the last couple of years. The inside looked very dated though.
hi ,
i have a silverline ,silvercrest gt10/2 built feb 1990,
purchased new on the 10/o5/91, for 7,069 pounds.they were made at full sutton, stamford bridge york.i think they closed down about 93?.
best regards jim
they are/were good wee vans, narrow and very light. also well specced for that time with hot water, casette loo, oven. there is one in storage at my dealer's and I have had a good look as well as a blether with the owner. really nice vans but not many left about. looked at a couple last year but both were riddled with damp
We are proud owners of a Silverline Silvercrest 12/2GT 1989, one previous owner prior to us, we've had her for 4 years now, she is in lovely condition, totally dry and very comfortable. All amenities on board too. Wonderful vans, shame they went out of business, from what I understand the Son took the business over from his Father and it didn't fare well afterwards. We have a Sunncamp Cardinal awning which doubles our space and suits us fine.

I have three sides, left, right and wrong - which one are you on?
gaynor,
ours is a silverline 10/2gt 1990.again totaly dry,had the carpets up to replace and floor like new.great little van ,we are so pleased with it. best regards jim
I believe the last ones produced were 1992 models. There are some lovely examples still about but beware of any that haven't been looked after as they are very prone to damp in the rear top corners if they haven't been re-sealed.

caz the 2 I looked at were bad almost everywhere but the back corners were worst, 1 had rotted the door frame and IMO was beyond salvage. Beats me why none of the big boys took on the design and builds them now. 5' wide and so lightweight for the spec. tow-able with a fiesta or corsa 1.3 ideal for the older vanner that doesnt want a big motor
Look at the way caravan sizes have gone generally in the last 15 years - the big boys just seem to think bigger and bigger. Maybe the current economic climate and fuel prices will send them back to their drawing boards and we may see the return of smaller lightweight vans, or I suspect we may see the demise of a few manufacturers as we did in the early 90s when times were difficult.

Having recently been given my mum's caravan (giving up that way of life) as a Christmas present, I too am trying to find as much information about it as possible.
It's a Silvercrest GT 12/2, made in 1984 I believe. I can't see the information plate on it, unless it's underneath the drawbar cowling? It's 12ft long body (15ft inc. drawbar). Naturally, it's the weights which I am most concerned about - anyone any idea of them?? Also could do with knowing the correct tyre pressures too as I think I may have a slow puncture in one of them.
Currently towing it with a 2004 Megane Sports Tourer 1.5Dci, it seems to be okay and handles like a dream (have towed various trailers over 20k miles so far), but that is without packing enough stuff away for a proper holiday yet.
Will have to try and get to a caravan shop at some point, see if I can find out any info the old fashioned way (as well as pick up a few bits and pieces, heh).
To find weight of caravan tow it onto a weighbridge nr your home, note weight, take caravan home & come back & weigh the car, subtract one from 'tother.
If the tyres are more than 5yrs old, replace them before you tow any distance or you could get a blow out which may damage the caravan.
Silverline caravans were at one time at Sutton Fields Industrial Est in Hull. They turned out Crown touring caravans as well and also the Adventura Campervan, but that was back in the late 70s

I am not 100% sure bit I think the Adventura Campervan was biult on a bedford CF chassis.
------------- Think this year is to follow old meet friends for 2014.
If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.
