because you dont know where the tyres have been stored or used the Caravan club and tyre associations recommend the tyre are changed at 5 years
agree with you on this,if you buy a new caravan and then check the caravan tyre age at 4 years of age thinking it needs changing because of the five year rule.if the tyre was already 4 years old when fitted the tyre would now be 8 years old.makes a mockery of the tyre age checking does it not?
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Tyres generally have a shelf life of 6 years and can show signs of cracking even if it has not been used and seeing a van stood for most of the time you get more cracking in one area, and i did not say would fail so why risk it driving around with the walls showing tiny cracks instead of nice smooth rubber, and they not cracks like in say a plastered wall.
I have had a good look at mine and cannot see any 4 digit code after the DOT. However there is a number which is 2001. Surely they would not fit tyres made in week 20 of 2001 on a 2004 caravan. The caravan was new when we purchased it on the 03/01/2005! The tyres are GTR 378s. Am I looking in the right place for the age of the tyre?
This can be a problem when tyres are on special offer, buy 1 get 1 free etc. They are trying to shift old stock which may be a couple of yrs old already.
I would have though the tyres wouldn't degrade much if they are stored unfitted, but certainly you have cause for complaint if a new caravan had 2yr old tyres on. I would guess the manufacturer bought a job lot cheap.

I doubt many buyers were as observant as the op.
I had to replace two of the tyres on my 4 x 4 when the fitter pointed out that the other two tyres were several years old althouhg they had a cuple thousand left on them. I then had all them changed and went to check the caravan and it seems that the tyres were made in 2001! I don't quite know how to tak this up with the dealer or even trading standards as the caravna was purchased new 4 years ago. Will be more careful next time if they are genuinely 8 years old.
I suppose I will need to start shopping around for the best price for replacement tyres.
If the tyres are over 6 years old and you have a blow out causing an accident, could the insurance company refuse a pay out based on the fact that the tyre was not "roadworthy" and it recommended by the Tyre Manufacturers Association that the tyres should be replace every 6 years but is only a guideline and not a law?
