Well as per the norm the van aerials they install are not too good. Any suggestions as i often see people putting up external aerials. Are they any good? help with this would be great. Thanks all in advance.

The omnidirectional aerial (Status 315) is only reasonable whereas the directional (Status 530) is much better. An external (on a post and directional) aerial is vary good depending on the actual aerial.

I converted to a 530 which is good enough and very convenient.

I agree.

An external directional aerial on a pole is best for reception and the most cost effective.

You need to appreciate that many caravan sites are not in good reception areas

DH went and got a pole and an aerial for the outside as our van doesn't have an earial and we get a great picture.

Also remember that soon you will only be able to get digital signals in some areas and these need a better signal than analogue.
We have the standard 315 ariel and find it very difficult to get a digital signal; so i have installed an external airel point and use a standard domestic one designed for digital signals in a medium strength area.

Don't forget though, when we go full digital the signal will be boosted. We live in a reasonable reception area and get digital via loft aerials (through concrete tiles)

I am in a 'NON' reception area for digital, however, with a homemade antenna in the attic thro clay tiles can receive 98 different tv channels plus innumeral dab radio stations, many of which are Dutch and Belgium. Most of it is rubbish but I think it's a case of suck it and see. You don't need a special antenna to receive digital. You can get a perfectly good one for about a tenner. Conentrate on direction and height, that's the key to good reception. The omni-directional antenna by Status will never be as good as the directional one and even that is limited in performance as it is unable to attain the height required in many areas (not all). There will always be exceptions as there are so many factors effecting reception. Antenna design is not an exact science as every location and set of circumstances are different and even vary from day to day. A bl**dy big pole strapped to the jockey wheel is the best bet !!!.Mick

go to screwfix and get yourself a 32 elememt wide band digital aerial part No 41700 cost £10.95 you can dismantle it in 2 mins , i have seen the same aerial in caravan accessory shops for over £32.00 , also make sure you use double insulated coax cable to the aerial and on fly leads ,

That's the one We've got and it seems to give a pretty good signal without having to use the booster. We have fitted it onto a 4 section pole that clamps to the side of the van.

another thing i forgot to mention ,some transmitters send out horizontal or vertical signals , so look at local houses to see if the aerials are vertical or horizontal ,and do likewise

Hi Nick & Sarah, sounds like you've got all the answers, good advice as usual on here, no need to spend a fortune. Joan's fine tks, we're just back from a week in Norfolk and am now waiting for the schools to go back so we can hit the road again. Next trip is Wales for the second time this year.

By the way, the maths involved in antenna design is not difficult,  it's based on the relationship between the frequency and the speed of light but I bet no one on here is interested so I wont elaborate...............Mick

We had much the same problems as most.
We have the proverbial Status 315 with a booster. It looks great on the roof of the van but it didnt do much for our tv.
We use a mini high gain aerial which travels made up in the van and is fixed to the side of the van on two self adhesive brackets when we arrive on site. We run it through a freeview box and have had no problems to date anywhere as yet.
