Hi

We are considering buying our first caravan. We have a folding camper at the moment which works brilliantly for our sleeping arrangements. We can't decide on newer or older, and the sleeping arrangements might sway it! We are limited by size so are looking for a single axle van at the lighter end of the spectrum.

We have three girls - 7,5 and 2.

I feel that an older 5 berth might be a bit cramped as the bunk over the double tends to be quite low. The traditional 6 berth route might well work for us, but we can't close a curtain on the children when they're in bed and have our own space. We have thought about the triple bunk, but are concerned that the head room might be a bit claustrophobic. We are thinking about the Bailey Ranger one.

Obviously all children are different but I wondered if anyone has experience of three children sleeping in those bunks.

Love to hear your stories!

Thanks

Ruth

Why don't you go to your nearest Bailey dealer, with the children, and let them try the bunks. You don't say where you are from but I'm sure there will a dealer not too far away from you.

We have a Bailey 6 berth with 3 fixed rear bunks and I cannot recommend it enough.
We have two small children (1 & 4) and we are able to put the children in bed and have a relaxing time in the awning or in the van. It does give you an extra living area as well.

I would recommend the bailey range and go and try one first at your local dealer.

Hope this helps. We changed from an old 5 berth this year to the Bailey Ranger 540/6 this year. We loved the layout - we were never fans of the traditional side dinette 6 berth layout- we also liked the price and the weight.  We have 4 kids, 13, 10, 2 and 8 months.

They love the bunks. They all like having their own little window and light. (Luckily the novelty of opening and closing the blinds has worn off....!!)

We put the 2 year old on the middle . He sleeps on a blow up 'Thomas first bed' which squashes in with the head at the ladder end. The sides of the Thomas bed are curved and quite high, and he hasn't managed to roll out yet. There is a wooden rail to attach to the middle bunk, but we haven't used it as yet - no space with the blow up bed on there. We chose the middle for him as we didn't dare put him on the top, and it's less back breaking for goodnight kisses than the bottom! He loves climbing up and down - it's like having a climbing frame at the back of the van!

The older two have tried out the other bunks.

Our oldest prefers the bottom bunk - she feels she has more headroom.

The 10 year old is on the top. He's happy there.

We tried the baby on the bottom, but manoevering him in and out was really awkward - we  were worried about bumping his head. - not much space between ladder and side of seat, so we put him on the made up bed in  a travel cot.

The front double is huge - when our baby was in a carrycot he slept next to the front window by our feet and we were all comfortable. We also had one of the kids friends with us too, so our oldest used the made up bed at the back and was quite comfortable. She missed having a reading light though.

Plenty of storage at the back for clothes, toys etc. We don't always have the older two, so use top and bottom bunks for storage at these  times - great for toy boxes, the fold up high chair and the travel cot etc

It's great being able to shut the door at bedtime and have a bit of privacy. We had a 5 berth before this one - 2 doubles and a bunk, with just a curtain around the bed. It was great when we only had the older two, but once number 3 arrived not enough space.

I think the back of the van can get a bit cold when on chilly nights - strangely there is no blown heating outlet there - there is one under the front double - right next to the heater and one in the bathroom but not one at the back. We bought a little thermostatic fan heater so that we wouldn't have to leave the door open.

Talking of the door, the 2 year old is a pain at times opening and closing it and has pulled it off it's runners a few times, but it seems to just click back in ok.

The little table at the back is great for them to play and do jigsaws etc, and there is plenty of room for 3 to sit for a meal if necessary - 4 kids at a push.

We added an extra plug socket in the kids bedroom for essential kids stuff - MP3, PSP etc, and are hoping to get a portable dvd player so they can lay in bed and watch tv to wind down and we don't have to watch hours of kids tv too!

We love this van - if you check out my other posts you'll see I have loads to say on the subject!

Hope you find a van that suits your family.

hi we have one of the new Bretagne, and have 3 kids aged 8,6 and 21 months. Mind you the 8 year old is the size of a 10 year old!

Had a pathfinder before and had to put one of the kids in the central lounge bed. The youngest was always falling out of the bed end, and the other two didn't want to share with him as when he woke in the morning he would jump up and down on them to wake them up. The older two then argued when they shared and the 6 year old would always wake us up in the middle of the night complaining that her (older brother)was taking all the bed.

We are now in love with our new van. The littlest is quite happy to go to sleep on the bottom bunk (not very far to fall out of bed), the six year old is in the middle (she did fall out of bed until we discovered there was a side rail to slot in the bunk) and the eldest on the top.He can't sit up though, but he is getting used to that. Because it is so much darker with the blinds closed they are all sleeping in in the mornings. We have no bedtime arguments anymore, and when we close the door across their area you can almost forget you have children with you.

One optional extra we took was for the wrap around seating and as a result we have a huge bed (can get all five of us in in the mornings - except the duvet's not big enough). It's very comfortable and warm. The Pageant does have a blown air heating vent in the rear bedroom.

We have also managed to just about squeeze all of us at the rear table for breakfast, but would struggle if the youngest two were much bigger.

Four/five years ago my husband swore he wouldn't change from a tent, but having come via the folding camper, even he says how pleased he is with the caravan, how relaxing it is and how much less stressful it is with the kids.

The shower is snug, but doable - we were on a CL last week and used it then. Otherwise I prefer using the shower block.

We were looking at the Ranger until the new Bretagne came out, which in the end felt suited us more (we kept going from one to the other) - but there are pros and cons to each (one of which being weight).

We did take our kids down to the dealers to try out the bunks and get their views (though I think the excitement clouded things a bit - we could have put them in a 2 berth eriba pop top and they would have said it was perfect for all five of us!)Anyway it was good to see how it might work in practice.

Have fun looking!

Thank you for such helpful responses. We had been to looked, and they did lie down on the beds. But that was a thought I had since we left.   We have never had a caravan before so I was really interested in how real families make it work! Pros and Cons between the 3 bunks, and the two lots of two bunks.

We need to buy a bigger car first, but then...
