Proprietary means(I guess in the context stated) bought in a shop as a wheelclamp or a hitchlock as stated on the box it came in, as opposed to summat being used as a wheelclamp or hitchlock, ie a padlock & chain wrapped round it. Although the dictionary definition says 'manufactuered by one particular firm' which may suggest the insurance company has a list of approved suppliers of security devices so I suggest you check with them.

sorry but using a clamp on site how the hell you going to move your van away in the event of a fire quickly enough! it`s bad enough with steadys down and hitchlock on but least your can push your van away.
and yes moaned like hell at the ins company stating that.
very bad idea on the ins part and they really hate paying out and really do like taking your moneys.
Thanks for the replies, i'll have a look at that website and also call them. The wording is definately a little 'Grey', almost as if the insurance company is hoping that you fail to comply!!

We always put on our wheel clamp when we pitch up, along with our hitch lock and steady lock. In terms of moving the van quickly thats not going to happen due to the awning being attached as well.

If there was a fire anywhere near our Van i wouldn't be p***ing about trying to move it. Id be getting the family as far away as possible & then making sure no one in the Vicinity of the fire was in difficulty.
Our policy has to have 2 locks on within 2 hours and one on immediately if left unattended. If I stopped for a sandwich then I can put the hitch lock on without bothering with the wheel clamp.
I never bother to put the wheel clamp on onsite either. I once asked a site manager why they didn't allow continental vans to be told it was because the door was on the wrong side. I suggested that the van just be turned around, but was told that this was a fire risk as the van couldn't be hitched up if a fire broke out.
If any van was going to be stolen off a site, I'm sure the theives would find a newer more valuable van than mine to steal anyway.
If a fire broke out in the van next to me, then I wouldn't bother trying to save the van, but if one broke out at 7 or 8 vans away then I would be trying to move PDQ
I read "proprietory" as being a proper wheel clamp rather than a lump of chain or a home made jobbie. To be honest though, if I made one then odds on it would be a damn site tougher than anything you bought in the shops. It'd probably take an hour to fit though.

Would it really make any difference at all? I have been caravaning 24yrs plus and never yet seen a van on fire. I have seen empty plots where one stood earlier.
I'd cheerfully abandon the van if it went up but i dont want it nicking.
When we 1st started out i wondered why everyone was putting wheel locks onto their caravans. When i went to insure my new(er) caravan the clerk told me that i had to put a wheel lock on the caravan when we are pitched.
We experienced a caravan fire on field at site we were staying 2 weeks ago. Not one person attempted to move any vans, just get themselves and families out of danger! We always attach hitchlock when on site.
