She does need to listen to what is going on, there is no other way! 

Is she a bit deaf?   We can easily hear our pump running.

There is a device you can fit, it limits how long a pump runs, can't remember what it is called.   Wizard will know.

if its one like this,the knob on the top is to regulate the preasure for it to come on and go off,turning anti clockwise decreases the preasure,clockwise will increase it,so try decreasing or icreasing it till the pump stops when the taps are turned off and on.

pete1946 yes it does have one of them a Pressure Switch but if the water runs out there is no Pressure to trip the switch to turn the pump off.

Skatty my pump runs for a few seconds after turning a tap off & till the pressure trips the switch.

jennifernn we can ear the internal pump but not the external.

she did make me laugh one time when the water run out & the pump burned out. i shouted at her & told her i was sick of telling her about it. so she replyed.  how do i know when the water as run out. I said sarcasticly (derrrrr when the water stops coming out of the tap.

If she can hear the on-board pump, you will just need to keep the on-board tank topped up and only let her use from that.

timtheenchanter the pump saver looks like a good thing & a good price. its a lot cheaper then a new pump.

jennifernn my OH uses water like its going out of fashion. around 60 liters a day. so i am filling both tanks every day. its starting to get a joke.

SO.

THIS will be what you are looking for.
basically a retro-fit timer, it will stop the pump running after a pre-set amount of time, thus stopping the pump running dry.
