when I return the caravan to storage and I wind the thingy off the caravan wheel is it alright to just wind it a fraction so its not touching the wheel? or should I wind it the whole way. Maybe a silly question.

What does it say in the manual?  Ours is either fully in or out.

I would think fully out is better, if you were to drive away with it too close it could be damaged by stones or muck.

Hi,  thanks for replying. I know that you have to wind it off the wheel so that its not touching. Mine is manual and you wind it till its pressing on the wheel sufficiently as indicated by a line on the mover. All I am asking is when in storage do I need to retract it fully or will it be okay just to wind it till its not touching the caravan wheel. I realise when towing on the road it must be fully retracted.

For the amount of effort required to fully wind it of i would do just that .
If you were to forget one day to wind it away from the tyres properly and then tow you could find as the tyre compresses it will come into contact with the rollers and damage the tyres .
