how much would you expect to lose on what you paid when trading your van in in the 1st twelve months
In the first year you will always lose the VAT plus depreciation , 2nd year will just be some depreciation only in a £14000 van you would expect to get £11,500 - £12000 back in a trade in after one year
We were looking to trade up to a larger TA Compass. We went to a well known dealer east of York on the A64, not with a view to trading in there, but a 'test the water' regarding a trade in price. They offered us £7000 for a van that was £16k exactly a year earlier. I would love to swap, but not with that sort of ridiculous loss after such a short time.
yes like car dealers they give you seven take 20 sell yours for 12 make a quick ten grand wham bam thank you mam thats what we get for sales men on commision i guess
Dont forget you will loose the VAT element straight away. So if the van was say 11750 to start with then it comes down to 10000 then they take off an amount that they think you will accept and then they can place it back on the forecourt for a profit. You can not expect a dealer to do it for nothing but at the same time there are better dealers out there than some who will give you a genuine deal. It is always hard to part ex in the first few years afer buying a new van. It will all boil down to what you are prepared to loose on the van and how much you want a new one. Good Luck hope you find what you want. We have bought our first van this year and it was new and already would like a larger one but there is no way we would chop it in for at least 3 years as it would not be worth while.
I tested the market at the weekend with two dealers and was offered £8069.00 by both on my 2006 Sterling One would only take the van in if the value of the new van was more then 50% of the part exchange ie i would have to buy a caravan over £16139.00.
The dealer wants to make a profit, this time of yr it may be a while before he can sell the van, so that is dead money standing there. Also he is the expert, he knows which vans sell & which dont--unless they are sold cheaply. If your van aint popular he wont want it, although of course he wants to sell you a new one so he will take it, but not at the price you want.
Trading in an almost new caravan becuase it was the wrong choice of because you are bored with it is an expensive hobby, its only somewhere to sleep, after all.

Hi We bought a new Bailey pagent provance in sept 2006 just under 13k went to trade in for a motorhome from same dealer he offered me £8700 against a mh over £20k so we stuck an ad on ebay with a reserve didnt sell also on preloved didnt sell but someone on here noticed me saying i couldnt get it sold and bought it from me at slightly less than i wanted but meant i could buy private also so bought a 1 1/2 year old motorhome for 11k less than new one same model and had under 2000 miles on it so it swings in roundabout what i lost in van i more than made up for in mh.
A friend of ours lost £2.000 on hers it was less than a week old as her husband passed away a couple of days after they purchased it, she asked the dealer to take it back thinking she wouldn't lose too much I believe you lose the most withing the first 12months & it slows down thereafter I think
In theory the best time to trade a van in is at three years old, any sooner and you loose too much, any later and they are not so interested in it, thats what I have been told.

The dealer was actually being quite kind, the £2k would have been the vat the dealer had paid to the taxman for an average caravan, so she actually got back all the money the dealer had actually kept. No doubt the dealer had a buyer waiting & made a few £100 on the deal but it aint quite the ripoff it seems.
